Tourism 2024. Emilia-Romagna and Comacchio good, Ferrara bad

Tourism. Emilia Romagna as a whole is doing well, Ferrara is bad and continues to fail to take off with the first three months of 2024 seeing 43,096 attendances. This is 13.5% less than 2023 and 15.9% less than 2019. In the region, the presence of Italian and foreign tourists is growing in the first quarter of the year, +9.9% compared to 2023 (+11 .9% on 2019), and arrivals +9.3% compared to last year (+5.4% on 2019). These are Istat data processed by the Statistics Service of the Emilia Romagna Region (verifiable here) which will be consolidated during 2024.

Overnight stays are slightly better in Ferrara which in total were 95,860, 4% less than the first quarter of last year when there were 99,813. The positive factor depends on the fact that there was an increase of 3.2% compared to 2019, the year used as a reference as it was the last one before the pandemic.

As mentioned on other occasions, however, i overnight stay data are ‘doped’ by the so-called brick tourism, which sees the workers of the various Pnrr construction sites staying overnight in the municipalities. It is enough to look at the data for Argenta (+195.2%), the other municipalities of the coast (42.4) and Ostellato (10.9) to realize this

To be noted difficulty of the capital in attracting foreign tourism which is decreasing both in overnight stays -1.2% on 2023 and -13.5% on 2019 and in tourist influx -0.4% on 2023 and -30.8% on 2019. Italian tourism is no exception – 16.2% on 2023 and -11.3% on 2019. The data on overnight stays by Italians improved slightly, decreasing on 2023 (-4.7%) but increasing on 2019 (+9.4%).

As usual, the performances of the Municipality of Comacchio are very good, with tourists increasing by 39.3% over 2023 and 82.2% over 2019. The data on overnight stays is also excellent with a +36.1% over 2023 and a +92.3% on 2019.

In the region the good time for art cities (except Ferrara) while in these first three months they have seen each other comforting data also for the coast and for the spa resorts. Art cities are growing on average in the region in attendance by +4.8% over 2023 (+13.7% over 2019) and in arrivals by +3% over 2023 (+4.5% over 2019). On the coast, aggregating foreign and Italian tourism data, we have a +25.1% on 2023 (+24.4% on 2019), while arrivals record a +26.5% on 2023 (+23.7% on 2019).
