TERAMO. «The goal is to get justice for what happened to my husband: he was killed at work. More than two months later, there is still no person registered in the register of suspects. I know that investigators are investigating, but this is difficult for us to understand.” He declares it, in an interview with Tirreno, Simona Mattolini50 years old, widow of Luigi Coclitethe 59-year-old originally from Montorio and resident in Vicarello (Livorno), one of the five victims in the collapse on the construction site of the Esselunga supermarket which occurred in February in Florence.
«When everything is over and there is a guilty verdict, because there will be», says the woman, «I would like the murderers, seeing as it was a murder and not an accident, to come to me and my children to look us in the face and at least apologize. I don’t want to be pitied, I want those responsible to pay for what they did. If we talk about manslaughter today there are alleged murderers who have not been registered in the register of suspects. Also because a year before the accident in Florence there had been the one in Genoa, also on an Esselunga construction site.” On the day of the accident she remembers that Luigi «was calm, as always. If he had perceived even just the slightest risk he would not have gone to the construction site where he had been on other occasions.” It was the owner of her husband’s company who alerted her by telephone: «He told me about the collapse and the first thing I asked him was: “From how many floors did it happen?” and when he replied: “From the third”, I understood. that there was no hope. I tried calling him but got no answers.” The woman says she got into the car with some friends and went to Florence. «A surreal scene», continues the woman, «I saw the beam, the collapse. I saw everything, but not Luigi. I didn’t show him to anyone even afterwards, because they have to remember him as he was.” How to combat deaths at work? For Mattolini «if you want you can, but to do things you have to want them. At the Florence construction site, if I’m not mistaken, nine checks had been carried out in a year and a half. What did they see that was okay? A construction site is not safe if a worker wears a helmet or safety shoes.” Is your husband’s death likely to be useless? “No. Imagine if that beam had fallen when the supermarket was open. We wouldn’t have been talking about five people but dozens.”
The Florence Public Prosecutor’s Office has arranged an initial technical consultancy to reconstruct the facts but without the formula of a once-in-a-lifetime investigation or evidentiary incident and therefore, at the moment, without any suspects. (red.te.)
