LECCE – The ceremony dedicated to the celebration of the 79th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Italian Republic took place, again this year with great participation of citizens and institutions, in Piazza Partigiani in Lecce, a symbolic place dedicated to the memory of those citizens of Salento who sacrificed their lives in the name of the ideals of freedom, peace and democracy.
The event, organized by the Prefecture with the collaboration of the civil and military institutions of the province, in agreement with the Provincial Committee for the valorization of the Culture of the Republic, began at 9.30 am, in the presence of the President of the Puglia Regional Council, of parliamentarians, the Mayor of the City of Lecce, the President of the Province, the heads of the Judiciary and the highest civil and military authorities, both city and provincial.
The event was also attended by the fighting and weapons associations, the ANPI and a delegation of students representing the Provincial Student Council and the municipal council of children of Lecce, who in their speeches highlighted the importance of honoring the memory of the many men and women who fought for freedom and for the affirmation of the values placed at the basis of the Constitution.
The Prefect Luca Rotondi, starting from the memory of the heroes who contributed with their sacrifice to the affirmation of the Republic, wanted to address a thought to the “heirs of this priceless heritage, the young people, so that their spirit of initiative makes them patriots of the future, custodians of the protection of fundamental rights, promoters of commitment, work and perseverance in daily renewing a pact of legality, with themselves and with the others, founded on the right to be free people and on the duty to preserve democracy, the fortress of freedom”.
