One hundred years ago, on 10 June, the assassination of Giacomo Matteotti by the fascist squads. Last Tuesday, a special history lesson for the students in the classes thirds of the Ugo Foscolo middle school in Levata di Grontardopart of the Comprehensive Institute of Vescovato directed by Paola Bellini.
On the initiative of the teachers of Literature, history and geography Leonilda Cambiati and Piera Federicithe historian Fabrizio Superti he spoke about the figure of the secretary of the Unity Socialist Party, framing him in the political season of the beginning of the twenty years, with various references not only to the national and Cremonese context, but also to anecdotal details and family life. For example, aspects that are not read about in school textbooks, such as the economic difficulties that the widow had to face or the fact that Matteotti’s children had to leave public school because they were viewed with suspicion. Topics capable of capturing the attention of 13-14 year olds, who followed the lesson with interest.
The topics at the center of the day had previously been addressed in class with the teachers, also in light of the study trip scheduled for 3 May to Fratta Polesine, in the province of Rovigo, where the Matteotti’s birthplace. A house – museum currently under renovation in view of the visit that the President of the Republic Mattarella will soon make.
“Since the house museum cannot be visited – explains Cambiati – we will stop at the cemetery where a wreath of flowers will be placed on the family tomb. So we’ll go to Villa Marzanaa town a few km from Fratta Polesine, the scene of a massacre in 1944 in which 43 civilians lost their lives, a municipality awarded the silver medal for military valour”.
The initiative is part of the collaboration between the school and theIdea Resistenza association of Grontardo, which for years has been offering study trips and moments of in-depth analysis on the themes of anti-fascism. gbiagi
