The city of Trieste today celebrated the 79th anniversary of the Liberation at the San Sabba Rice Mill, a moment of commemoration which saw the participation of civil, military, religious authorities and numerous citizens.

The San Sabba Rice Mill, used as a prison camp by the Nazi occupier from 1943 to 1945, is one of the main places of memory of the Resistance and Liberation in Italy, as underlined by the recent State law (L. 205/2017) to protect and promote the historical and cultural heritage linked to the fight against Nazi-fascism.

The banners of Trieste, Muggia, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Duino Aurisina and San Dorligo della Valle/Dolina attended the ceremony, together with the representatives and banners of various groups and associations linked to the memory of the Resistance. Among them, the presence of the flag of the Jewish Brigade stands out, which contributed to the liberation of Italy within the Eighth Army of the British Army.

During the ceremony, laurel wreaths were laid by local institutions and surrounding municipalities, as well as by groups and associations. The interventions followed one another with the words of the Municipality of Trieste, the Municipality of San Dorligo della Valle, the National Association of Partisans of Italy and the Trade Unions.

The religious part of the ceremony saw the participation of representatives of the different confessions present in the city: Catholic, Jewish, Greek Orthodox and Serbian Orthodox, together with representatives of the Protestant Churches.

All the activities linked to the Anniversary of the Liberation were promoted by the Municipality of Trieste with the support of other municipalities and local institutions, carried out thanks to the contribution of the Civic Museum of the Risiera di San Sabba – National Monument and with the support of the Ministry of Culture.
