Liberation Day in Polesine for Elena Matteotti

ROVIGO – The granddaughter of the martyr Giacomo #Matteotti arrived in Rovigo in the morning, went to say goodbye to the monument dedicated to her grandfather in the town square of the same name, and moved to Fratta #Polesine for the painting of the exhibition dedicated to Giacomo #Matteotti at the Mulino Al Pizzon ecomuseum, and finally stopped in Villanova del Ghebbo for the naming of the city park after the illustrious Italian deputy.

Giacomo #Matteotti was a municipal councilor in Villanova del Ghebbo before becoming mayor of Villamarzana and then a socialist deputy, kidnapped and killed by a team of criminals appointed by Benito Mussolini to “solve the annoyance” of that parliamentarian who was about to divulge a series of information in the chamber on the interference of private companies on the oil concessions that Mussolini would soon grant.

It was 1924, #Matteotti was a premonitor of the nascent fascist dictatorship and its totalitarian drift, an obstacle to be removed.

The prefect of Rovigo Clemente Di Nuzzo, who spoke in Villanova del Ghebbo, greeted the granddaughter of the martyr Giacomo #Matteotti warmly and deferentially and outlined her extraordinary human profile, of civil and political commitment, “an authentic beacon for freedom, democracy #, an indelible example for all men to come.”

The intervention of Villanova del Ghebbo, carried out thanks to the precious contribution of the Cariparo Foundation, was illustrated by the vice-president Giuseppe Toffoli who recalled how the Municipality of Villanova del Ghebbo was awarded the Green Spaces tender, a measure which was refinanced several times until to see the Foundation’s economic commitment doubled, from 1.2 to 2.4 million euros, because “it is a citizen’s right to live in a green, safe, inclusive, uncontaminated environment” recalled Toffoli.

An enormous satisfaction for the outgoing mayor Gilberto Desiati who concluded the administrative activity with the naming of the city park after Giacomo #Matteotti in the presence of his niece #Elena who was accompanied by her niece Beatrice.

“The idea of having Giacomo here, behind me, makes me tremble. # Bearing this surname was not easy, it was a wound that we had to process within our family – stated #Elena #Matteotti – We had to build a memory of Giacomo and what happened to him, because memory allowed us to build an identity. # Young people must know their grandfather’s story, my father didn’t tell me Giacomo’s story because he wanted to protect me, but instead I believe that the story should be told. # The transparency, the courage, the action of grandfather Giacomo was an achievement, it is the identity of a democratic country” commented his granddaughter #Elena in Villanova del Ghebbo.

The day ended with the recited reading of fragments of the book by the historian Giampaolo Romanato “Giacomo #Matteotti a different man” edited by Irene Lissandrin and Sara Micovski, and a musical performance by the wind orchestra of the F. Venezze Conservatory of Rovigo directed by Stefano Romani in the municipal gym located inside the #Matteotti park.
