Thousands of people in Piazza Loggia to celebrate the Liberation

Thousands of people gathered in Piazza Loggia to celebrate seventy-ninth Anniversary of the Liberation. A colorful square with hundreds of flags, which also welcomed a large Palestinian flag, carried by about twenty people who had come from the procession that marched through the streets of Carmine in the afternoon to protest against the war in Gaza.

The afternoon it opened with the concert of the City Bandin Piazza Loggia, then the laying of crowns on the tombstones of Palazzo Loggia, to the stele that commemorates the victims of the massacre and to the plaque to those who fell in the city of Brescia for freedom in Largo Formentone.

On the authorities’ stage were several mayors and representatives of the Province and Region of Lombardy, together with the two young people chosen for the official speeches: Marta Cremaschi and Christian Zoppini, of the Fiamme Verdi.

The interventions

«The War of Liberation gives us rejection due to indifference», said Marta, who attacked «that minister of the Republic who managed to say on television that the word “anti-fascism” is divisive». You lashed out against the warmongering rhetoric and the dismantling of the welfare state and quoted Sandro Pertini: «Fascism is not an opinion, it is a crime».

From “new indifference» Christian Zoppini spoke instead, «to be opposed by every means» and of peace, «a right of every individual and of every community. A pressing need.”

The mayor

Even the mayor, Laura Castelletti, quoted Sandro Pertini: «To the most perfect of dictatorships – he said – I prefer the most imperfect of democracies», and recalled how «fragile democracy is, a precious asset to be defended every day. Freedom – he concluded – it is not a gift, but an achievement».
The day of celebration opened in the morning with mass and the laying of wreaths at the Partisan Shrine in the Vantiniano cemetery.
