Lecce, 200 signatures against raising the limits of electromagnetic fields

Politics/Environment – 25 Apr 2024

The initiative was promoted by “Rights and Civilizations for Lecce”. A letter accompanied by the signatures collected has already been sent to Mayor Carlo Salvemini

There are just a few days left until the deadline (30 April 2024) for the deadlines within which municipalities can express their (non-binding) opinion on raising the limits of electromagnetic fields from 6 to 15 volts/metre decided by the Meloni government and approved by Parliament on Last December 30th. The candidate for mayor of the “Rights and Civilizations for Lecce” list, Agostino Ciucci, in recent days sent a letter to the mayor Carlo Salvemini, accompanied by around 200 signatures of Lecce citizens collected in recent weeks, to ask for a moratorium and further studies to verify the possible damage to public health resulting from this measure.

Agostino Ciucci’s initiative, which follows a conference on the topic recently organized at the Castromediano museum, then found further impetus from a very recent pioneering initiative of the Municipality of Dobbiaco, whose municipal council voted a resolution in which it expresses opposition to any increase in the limits on the municipal territory, highlighting that “no reason, technical, economic or even simple alignment with the upper limit values already in force in other European Union countries, can justify a health risk for the population, as well as for the entire biodiversity, understood as flora and fauna, of the ecosystem”.

“What we ask of Mayor Salvemini – explains Agostino Ciucci (in the picture), mayoral candidate of Rights and Civilizations for Lecce – is to exercise the prerogatives allowed to him as guarantor of the health of his citizens. It is within the deadline to do so, it could therefore, as the Municipality of Dobbiaco has already done, issue a contingent and urgent ordinance in order to block the provision pending further studies”.

“In recent days – continues Dr. Ciucci – the mayors have received information from the Italian Electrosensitive Association in which they are asked to inhibit or limit, where possible, the strengthening of the antennas in their territory, also in consideration of the fact that the mapping of the mobile networks dates back to 2021. From this, it could happen that many areas registered as unserved or with limited speed, have instead, between 2021 and 2024, undergone numerous implementations of base radio stations. From this, at the very least the municipalities should control the updating of these maps”. (mb)
