The Verona construction site of RFI, the Italian railway network, begins: investment of 441 million euros.
The preparatory activities for the start of work on the entrance to the Brescia Est-Verona high-speed railway line will begin in May. The group of companies formed by Pizzarotti, Saipem and Salcef was awarded the works contracted by RFI.
The entire railway line of approximately 48 kilometres, which has reached 63% of progress, involves a total investment of 2.8 billion euros, also financed with Pnrr funds.
The works at the Verona hub consist of the construction of 3.6 kilometers of new high-speed line, whose activation is expected by 2028, which will allow the direct interconnection between the Milan-Verona line and the Brenner line and in the upgrading of approximately 4.2 kilometers of the existing railway network. The project also includes interventions to rationalize and strengthen the Verona Porta Nuova station, with modification and expansion of the current platforms and underpasses.
The interventions constitute a first phase of the overall reorganization project of the Verona railway hub, with the aim of reducing interference between the different traffic flows, increasing the capacity of the infrastructure, also benefiting freight transport.
In Verona there is the QuadranteEuropa interport, an increasingly central infrastructure in the national logistics structure, especially with a view to connecting with the European corridors. From Verona, Mercitalia Logistics, the leading company of the logistics hub of the FS group, carries out 260 trains per week to Germany, Austria, Scandinavia and Benelux, guaranteeing fundamental support for Made in Italy.
Also in the Quadrante Europa interport, a series of investments have been underway for some months by RFI to create a new intermodal terminal compliant with the European standard (Fourth module) with eight tracks for loading and unloading goods and six new tracks of arrivals and departures.
