Prefect of Catanzaro: ‘Festival of regained freedom’

Double celebrations, in Calabria, for the anniversary of April 25th.

In addition to the official commemorations, initiatives promoted by Anpi, CGIL and other associations were held in various locations and took place without any tension.

In Catanzaro the official ceremony was held in Piazza Matteotti, with the laying of a laurel wreath at the War Memorial by the undersecretary of the Interior Wanda Ferro, the prefect Enrico Ricci and the regional commander of the Carabinieri Piero Salsano.

The meaning of April 25, said the prefect, is that “of all the years, from ’45 to today. It is the celebration of reconquered freedom, of democracy, the freedom reconquered with the end of the fascist dictatorship, the Nazi occupation, the opprobrium of the racial laws, the persecution of Jews and political opponents. Therefore it is a moment of evaluation of the importance of freedom which is the foundation of our constitutional system and of the awareness that freedom goes hand in hand with democracy. One cannot ignore the other. April 25th is everyone’s holiday and it is a celebration that unites. It can only unite because we all recognize ourselves in the constitutional values that arise from the liberation struggle“.

A similar event took place in Cosenza in the presence of the prefect Vittoria Ciaramella, the mayor Franz Caruso and the authorities.

Flags of peace and a banner with the writing “10, 100, 1000 via Rasella” characterized the demonstration of Anpi and CGIL in Cosenza, while in Catanzaro, at the similar initiative, in addition to the flags of peace and CGIL, they were waved Palestinian flags.

Also in Catanzaro, in the Lido district, the mayor Nicola Fiorita read Antonio Scurati’s monologue not broadcast by Rai.

Same initiative in Reggio Calabria, with the mayor Giuseppe Falcomatà who read the text after placing a laurel wreath on the Stele al Partigiano in Villa Umberto I.
