April 25th, torchlight night and today the party at Priamar

Savona – He talked about “right to freedom” in all its forms, last night, the mayor Marco Russo in the prayer in Piazza Martiri, for the celebrations of April 25th. Freedom of thought. Freedom to enjoy public healthcare. Finally, freedom to be recognized as citizens of the country in which you were born, even if you are a foreigner.

«Allow me to send from here greetings to the writer and intellectual Antonio Scurati – said Russo – I would like an applause to rise from this square: his words have not fallen on deaf ears”, he said, referring to Scurati’s controversy with Rai, which chose not to broadcast his speech on April 25th.

The mayor then referred to the need to protect public health, in stark contrast to attempts to privatize care. «We support the appeal of scientists in favor of the National Health System which, as the promoters say, “works not only to protect health, but contributes to social cohesion”».

Finally, a nod to the topic of Ius Soli. “Some weeks ago we have given every foreign child born in Savona the certificate of honorary citizenship – Russo said. A purely symbolic act, wanted by the municipal council, unfortunately not unanimously, which however wants to tell the children and their parents – to whom we have handed over the Constitution and the Statute of the Municipality – that they are part of our community and enrich it”.

His words were interrupted several times by the applause of a square full of people. «Madam Prime Minister – finally said the mayor, ideally addressing the head of the Government Giorgia Meloni – say the word “anti-fascism”. Recognize that anti-fascism and the partisan struggle marked the end of the darkness of the twenty years of fascism and the beginning of the redemption of our country. And we remember Matteotti, whose 100th anniversary of his death marks the 100th anniversary of his death.” The university professor Alberto De Bernardi and the young student of the Grassi Scientific High School Giulia Gosio then spoke from the stage. Many people in the square, gathered at the end of the torchlight procession, which started from the neighborhoods of Savona. A very heartfelt and well-attended event. Also touching is the screening of the period film (from 1974) with images of the inauguration of Agenore Fabbri’s monument. The work that has become a symbol of the city, Gold Medal for the Resistance.

After the official ceremonies yesterday and this morning at the Zinola cemetery and in front of the monument in Piazza Mameli, we will continue with the commitment, but also with moments of celebration.
