Latina, April 25, 2024 – The countdown has officially begun: from 2 to 4 May Latina will host Capitan Acciaio, the Srecycling super hero, which will stop in the Lazio capital to raise awareness among citizens of all ages about the benefits of separate waste collection and, in particular, on the importance of recycling steel packaging.

The initiative, promoted by RICREA, the non-profit National Consortium for the Recycling and Recovery of Steel Packaging part of the CONAI System, will offer adults and children theopportunity to discover that steel is 100% infinitely recycled, and that correct disposal is the first step to trigger the virtuous circuit of the circular economy.

During the three days Captain Steel will welcome citizens in Piazza del Popolo, to concretely demonstrate how, thanks to recycling, all steel packaging such as jars, cans, drums, cans, buckets, cans, crown caps and closures, can be reborn in the form of new products. Among the many activities offered, creative-play workshops for the little ones aimed at raising awareness of the different types of packaging and stimulating their imagination; quizzes and games to test adults’ knowledge of good recycling practices.

“In 2023, Italy achieved extraordinary results, reaching a steel packaging recycling rate of 87.8%, already widely exceeding the European target of 80% set for 2030 – declared Domenico Rinaldini, President of the RICREA Consortium – “These numbers are the result of numerous communication initiatives at national and local level, just like the Capitan tour Steel, and the synergistic and well-tested work of all the players in the supply chain. Our recycling superhero allows us to talk about the environmental convenience of the correct disposal of steel packaging, protagonists of a virtuous and endless circular path: if collected and sent for recycling, in fact, they can come back to new life in the form of artefacts such as tracks railways, bolts or street furniture”.

Captain Steel’s stages along the country will also be an opportunity forto make known the virtuous data on the recovery and recycling of packaging waste in Italy: in 2023, an average of 4.8 kg of steel packaging was collected per inhabitant. A confirmation that the collection and recycling system is well tested.

In the last year, 428,043 tonnes of steel packaging were sent for recycling (+2% compared to the previous year), sufficient to build approximately 4,280 km of railway tracks, capable of ideally covering the distance between Latina and Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.
