“Between fascism and anti-fascism there cannot be a third way, other than that of hypocrisy. Those who represent the institutions cannot have hesitations in condemning fascism and defining themselves as anti-fascist and it is all the more inadmissible that a Prime Minister who is at the heads of the State and which in this sense would demonstrate that it is not compatible with our Constitution, indeed that it is culturally and ideologically foreign to it”.

The president of the Anpi Loris Parpinel froze the institutions lined up in Piazzale Ellero in Pordenone for the ceremony on April 25th. Applause for him from the public, not from the representatives of the centre-right, many of whom are among the authorities.

In a ceremony brought forward to 8.30, and in any case attended, the protests of the past also returned to the square. “Enough chainsaw mayor, free Palestine” a small group of kids from the anarchist area shouted several times during the speeches of Renato Pujatti (president of the fair) and Alessandro Ciriani, showing a pro-Palestine banner.

In his speech the mayor condemned all totalitarianism, fascism and communism, and spoke of the value of freedom and peace. The latter cannot always be maintained with pacifism, as Ciriani added, citing ongoing conflicts.

The mayor, also stigmatizing the behavior of those who recently damaged the monument to the unknown soldier, recalled the value of those who died to guarantee the freedom that citizens enjoy today.

At the end the band sang Bella ciao, sung by citizens and scouts, not by the institutions. The ceremony continued with a procession to lay the wreath at the Martelli monument in the gardens of the Study Centre. Six mayors and councilors wearing the tricolor sash marched. Ciriani handed over the baton to his deputy, Alberto Parigi.
