April 25th celebration, a reflection of the Civic Coalition

«On April 25th we celebrate the anniversary of the liberation of Italy from the fascist regime and Nazi oppression. Thousands of partisans fought – often paying with the price of their own lives – to give a better future to the new generations so that there would be no more state censorship or repression, but freedom, democracy and authentic participation. Yet our constitutional democracy – founded on the principles and values promoted by the Constituent Assembly – is slowly transforming into an illiberal “democracy”: an example of this is the repression by the police with truncheons of students who took to the streets to demand an improvement in the school system, the Government’s censorship of artists and journalists who publicly declare themselves anti-fascists or the elimination of cross-examination in talk shows when members of the Government majority are present, even the compromising of the right to abortion following of the intervention of “pro-life” associations in family counseling centers and the prevention of same-parent couples from being able to have a legally recognized daughter”. Thus the municipal councilors of the Civic Coalition Carmine Doronzo and Michela Diviccaro.

«All this does not seem respectful towards all those women and all those men who about 80 years ago thought and designed a different Italy for young people, less narrow and oppressive, but rather more open, progressive and free. As well as the many Barletta men and women who fell during the brutal Nazi occupation in our city and throughout Europe. It is our duty to defend the constitutional principles and the historical memory which is inevitably linked to the most current present. Precisely, we are keen to contextualize those messages and make them current, to decide which side to take in the world today. This is why we believe, without any hesitation, that this April 25th is an additional opportunity to support the Palestinian and Kurdish resistance, as well as all the resistance in the world that opposes bloody and authoritarian regimes. For this reason, as a political group of the Civic Coalition we declare our participation in the numerous events organized in the city and we will not fail to give our full support to the associations and volunteers who organized them, to continue to support the fight against neo-fascism in Barletta too and repressions.”
