Bardini workshop. The art of wood is the title of the exhibition organized by Municipality of Florence – Florence World Heritage Office with MUS.E, Regional directorate of Tuscany museums of the Ministry of Culture – Mozzi Bardini Museum and Gallery And University of Florence and curated by Giulia Coco and Marco Mozzo, which finds space in the Octagonal Room of the Fortezza da Basso of Florence, on the occasion of International Crafts Exhibition 2024, from April 25th to May 1st. The one presented at MIDA 2024 is a preview of the new exhibition project Bardini workshop. The art of woodscheduled for fall 2024 at the Stefano Bardini Museum from Florence.

After the first edition entitled Bardini workshopwhich last year presented the laboratories set up by Stefano and Ugo Bardini at Palazzo Mozzi between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the new exhibition project Bardini workshop. The art of wood reveals to the public the Bardini carpentry workshop, where they produced, restored and remodeled chairs, chests and other furnishings in medieval and Renaissance style, in great demand all over the world. Decorative elements, inlays and wooden artefacts – alongside work tools, photographs, paper patterns used for the restoration and for the creation of the pastiches that have made the Bardini company universally famous – will allow the public to access the secrets of the lively laboratory, understanding its functioning and deepening both the techniques and materials and the sources of inspiration and repertoires.

Thanks to a careful and original selection of artefacts, repertoires and work tools still preserved in Palazzo Mozzi – acquired by the Italian State in 1996 and now home to the Regional Directorate of Tuscany Museums of the Ministry of Culture – it is possible to learn about the organization and working methods of this great artistic undertaking. The palace was in fact a true “art factory” where artisans, workers, restorers, under the careful direction of Bardini, restored and produced art objects, giving shape to the dream of the Italian Renaissance. Palazzo Mozzi was a true “art factory”, where skilled craftsmen led by the Bardini restored and created objects, works, furnishings and furniture that gave shape to the dream of the Italian Renaissance so longed for between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The exhibition, with a renewed focus on the art of wood, offers in the context of the International Crafts Exhibition a selection of the objects that will be more widely exhibited at the Bardini Museum, allowing us to grasp the creative and artisanal processes implemented by the different workers.

The exhibition presents the results of a work of ordering, restoration and research of the immense and varied collection belonging to the Mozzi Bardini Museum and Gallery, the result of the collaboration activated in 2019 between the Regional Directorate of Tuscany Museums of the Ministry of Culture, the School of Specialization in Historical and Artistic Heritage of the University of Florence and the Memofonte Foundation of Florence.

The exhibition is open from 25 April to 1 May, every day from 10am to 8pm; the visit includes access to the basement of the Fortress.
