Sassari: wins the regional title, but is disqualified for non-compliant shoes

April 24, 2024. The legislation that provides for regulation of the use of shoes, depending on the distance and terrain on which one runs, is struggling to enter the minds of several athletes. But there are checks every now and then.

It happened in Sassari, last April 20th: the 10,000 meter race, valid as an absolute regional championship, was won in 39’28 by Veronica Pala (ASD Ichnos), a time which would also represent her personal best.

An inspection of the shoes used led to the subsequent disqualification.

The “incriminate” model is not known, the thickness of the sole of which was certainly higher than the permitted limits. As can be seen from an excerpt of the list in the cover photo, there are very specific limits, which are (in the case of the track): less than 20 mm for race distances up to 800 meters, less than 25 mm for distances over 800 meters. In the case of road racing the maximum limit allowed is 40 mm.

Here we don’t want to go into the discussion of potential advantages, but simply to remind you that there are regulations to comply with. It is now difficult to ignore, therefore not know, what we are talking about, given that World Athletics publishes the list of permitted models weekly.

This is what the Fidal legislation provides

SUBJECT: Technical Rule 5 – Racing shoes
With the publication of the federal Regulations for the 2024 Activity – adapting to international procedures – it was abolishedin all events, the obligation to issue certification of the shoes used by the athletes.

Point 10.14.3 of the 2024 ACTIVITY REGULATIONS states the following:

“The requirements of the shoes used in competition must correspond to the provisions of the Athletics Shoe Regulation WA. To comply with the rules, the GGG carries out random checks on the shoes used in the events reserved for the Pupils, Juniors, Promises and Senior categories. If the shoe is not certified in the WA Approved Shoe List or has not been identified, the result remains unofficial pending further investigations (in this case the shoe may also be withdrawn by the Judges). Subsequently, if the shoe is not approved, the result must be cancelled and the athlete may be disqualified. Mountain and trail running events are excluded from these rules.”
