“My Brilliant Friend” by Elena Ferrante at Libraccio in Ferrara

Saturday 27 April at 2.30 pm, in the San Crispino Oratory room of the Libraccio bookshop in Ferrara, in collaboration with PurpleSquare Ferrara Reading Group, “My Brilliant Friend” by Elena Ferrante.

The novel begins by following the two child protagonists, and then teenagers, behind the scenes of a miserable neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples, among a crowd of minor characters accompanied along their journey with careful assiduity. The author delves into the complex nature of the friendship between two little girls, between two young girls, between two women, following their individual growth, the way they influence each other, the good and bad feelings that nourish a true, robust relationship over the decades. She then narrates the effects of the changes that have affected the neighborhood, Naples, Italy, over more than fifty years, transforming the friends and their bond. And all this precipitates on the page with the progress of the great popular narratives, dense and at the same time fast, profound and light, continually overturning situations, revealing secret backgrounds of the characters, adding event to event without respite, but with the depth and power of voice to which the author has accustomed us. This is the kind of book that never ends. Or, to put it better, the author brings the narrative of Lila and Elena’s childhood and adolescence to a complete conclusion in this first novel, but leaves us on the threshold of new great changes that are about to upset their lives and their very intense relationship.

Purple Square it is a virtual and physical community and a movement inspired by Michela Murgia. The intent of Purple Square is, in fact, to collect Murgia’s words, preserving her precious cultural and political heritage and carrying forward the sharing of her values. Purple Square originated on Telegram, where thousands of people deal with various topics (rights, education, reading, masculinity, and much more) and are committed to listening and respecting all requests and sensitivities. The people of Purple Square set themselves the goal of making their voices heard, in order to transform themselves and the world around them also through collective projects and actions, where everyone has the right to speak and participate and can contribute to the path collective as he wishes.

For 18 years Este.com offers independent information to its readers and has never accepted public funds so as not to weigh even a cent on the shoulders of the community. The work we do has a significant economic cost and private advertising is not always sufficient.
For this reason we ask those who read us every day and, we hope, appreciate us to give us a small contribution based on their possibilities. Even a small amount of support, multiplied by the tens of thousands of Ferrarese who read us every day, can become fundamental.
