A 64-year-old ski mountaineer from the province of Varese has died during an excursion on the hills of Verbano Cusio Ossola, in the Formazza valley area.
The Formazza del Cnsas stationthe Alpine Rescue was alerted just after 5pm on Wednesday due to a request for help coming from one athlete found himself in difficulty due to an illness as it descended into the area of Lake Toggia downstream from the «Bocchetta del Castel».
The ground teams operated in concert with a Borgosesia medical helicopterbut when help arrived there was nothing more that could be done for the man.
The search and identification operations of the body were made particularly difficult by the bad weather conditions related to strong gusts of wind which hit the area.
