ROME – CLAL data captures an impressive phenomenon that we have been reporting for years: farms are collapsing and pigs are concentrating. Compared to an 8.3% drop in the total number of farms, pigs decreased by only 2.25%. The data from the Northeast is particularly impressive (-16.54% in Veneto and -18.55% in Friuli Venezia Giulia), as well as Calabria (-52.88%), Valle d’Aosta (-27.66%) and Puglia (-17.80%).

“There are many reasons, in addition to the traditional ones we want to focus on two extremely important for us: a suffocating bureaucracy, which discourages small breeding and encourages large numbers, as well as increasingly restrictive Consortium regulations, and the arrival of the Plague African Swine, which is leading to the closure of more and more realities before the precautionary area extends.
