This year marks the 79th anniversary of Liberation Day, that day in 1945 when the Nazi occupation and the fascist dictatorship came to an end. In Pisa the ANPI dedicates it to the memory of Carlo Smuraglia, national president from 2011 to 2017, passed away in 2022.

Born in Ancona on 12 August 1923, he arrived in Pisa in 1942 to study law. After September 8, 1943 he joined a partisan formation that operated in the Marche region. In 1944 he enlisted as a volunteer in the “Cremona” combat group of the renewed Italian army. After the Liberation he returned to Pisa and graduated in Law. In Pisa he began his journey in institutions, in the profession of lawyer and in his university career.

For 13 years it was councilor in the Provincefirst in the delegation chaired by Professor Enrico Pistolesi, then in the councils led by Antonino Maccarrone. He left when he took up the professorship in Pavia, then at the University of Milan.

Was president of the regional assembly of Lombardybut also senator of the Republic, member of Superior Council of the Judiciary. He practiced as a lawyer engaging in memorable trials. Finally, on 2 June 1980 he was awarded the honor of Knight Grand Cross of Merit of the Italian Republic.

“He is one of the brightest figures who accompanied the path of the Republic. He began in Pisa and remained deeply attached to Pisa throughout his long existence – he commented Bruno Possentiprovincial president of the ANPI – we witness demonstrations that are characterized by languages, gestures, displays of explicitly fascist symbols and a worrying intensification of xenophobic and racist attitudes. The world is at war and there is the risk of nuclear catastrophe. The Anpi says no. As then, we need to be partisans. Partisans of peace”.
