Seventy-nine years since the Liberation: events in the area

The importance of memory. Laying of laurel wreaths for the fallen, themed readings and musical moments: these are just some of the commemoration and remembrance initiatives organized by the institutions of the Municipalities of the Umbrian Valley in view of the Liberation Day on Thursday 25 April. A morning full of events promoted by the Foligno administration. The commemorations will begin at 9am at the Cancelli Shrine with the deposition of a first laurel wreath, and then move, at 9.30am, to the votive chapel Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pianto in Via Garibaldi, with the deposition of a second laurel wreath to the Stele dedicated to the fallen, the maimed and the war disabled of Foligno. At 10.30am, meet at the Allied Military War Cemetery in Rivotorto di Assisi: a laurel wreath will also be laid there at the British and Commonwealth War Cemetery. Finally, stop at 11.30 in Piazza della Repubblica in Foligno, where honors will be paid to the city banner with the deposition of laurel wreaths on the memorial stone of the fallen on the facade of the cathedral of San Feliciano and the town hall, in the presence of the picket honor of the Army National Selection and Recruiting Center. This will then be followed at 11.45 by the speeches of the president of the city council, Lorenzo Schiarea, and the mayor Stefano Zuccarini. Closing the morning was the performance of the Italian anthem by the Belfiore Philharmonic. Also scheduled in Foligno are other initiatives promoted by the Anpi: from 10am to 1pm in Largo Carducci there will be a membership campaign, while from 4.30pm to 9pm in the Parco dei Canapè there will be an appointment with the “Liberation Festival” with speeches on the Resistance , concerts and musical selections.

There are also numerous initiatives promoted in Bevagna. We will then return to Bevagna where, at 12.15, the procession will leave from Piazza Silvestri and reach the monuments to the fallen for the laying of a laurel wreath and the official commemoration in the presence of the authorities and a representative of the Selection Center and national recruitment of the Foligno Army. The musical band of the City of Bevagna will participate in the celebrations.

Assisi also participates in the celebration of remembrance, with a series of events organized in collaboration with the Anpi. It will begin at 9am with the laying of a laurel wreath in honor of the fallen of all wars at the monument in Martin Luther King square in Santa Maria degli Angeli. This will be followed, at 10am, by the institutional greetings of the mayor of Assisi and the tribute to Giacomo Matteotti, on the centenary of his death, by the councilor for school and educational policies, in Piazza Matteotti (via del Turrione intersection). At 10.15am, the laurel wreath will be placed in honor of the fallen of all wars at the monument in Piazzale Trieste with a commemorative reading by the Anpi. At 10.30, however, another commemorative reading is scheduled by the president of the city council in via Borgo Aretino (Vittorio Rinaldi plaque). Finally, celebratory events also took place for the hamlet of Collemancio di Cannara, which in collaboration with the Anpi promoted the event “Long live the anti-fascist Republic”. We will leave at 4pm from the Collemancio cemetery for a walk of remembrance to the tombs of Crispolto Ciotti and Sorci Nazzareno (partisans of the Francesco Innamorati brigade) where there will be readings and the flower-laying ceremony. Speakers will be Teresa Spoletini for the Spi CGIL of Bastia Umbra and Luigino Ciotti for the Valle Umbra Nord section of the ANPI. Partisan snack will follow.
