TRIESTE – They deceived the elderly and then robbed them in their homes but the State Police managed to arrest them in Sirmione (BS), executing a precautionary custody order of house arrest from the Trieste Prosecutor’s Office. The couple, made up of two Italian citizens, a man and a woman, both residents in the province of Cuneo, must answer for the crime of aggravated theft in competition. Specifically, the staff of the Flying Squad carried out careful investigations following an episode of theft in a house in via Diaz, which occurred on 18 March last, of an elderly lady from Trieste, who was stopped on the street by the two who asked her for a first moment information relating to any houses for sale in the area.

In the interview the lady provided information on her surname and residence, thus allowing the suspects to be welcomed into the house and to steal, with the excuse of having to use the bathroom, gold jewelery for a total of around 5 thousand euros. The investigators’ analysis also revealed that on February 1st in Siena, another elderly lady had been deceived with the excuse of information on apartments for sale in the victim’s building and, once convinced to be hosted in the house, the couple had managed to steal three precious men’s watches from her. From the descriptions provided by the victims, it appeared clear that the couple could be the same, therefore by analyzing the vehicle transits recorded by the license plate readers present in the two municipalities, a particular car emerged, a rental Fiat Panda, present in both locations in circumstances of time compatible with the commission of the thefts, which attracted the attention of the Flying Squad.

The investigation then focused on the drivers of the rental car. The pair of suspects were accused of having committed similar thefts in the provinces of Verona and Imperia with the same system. The photographic comparison with the driving license archive and the city cameras allowed the victims to recognize the perpetrators of the thefts, allowing the Flying Squad to request a precautionary custody measure granted by the Trieste Public Prosecutor’s Office which was implemented together with the police station staff of Desenzano del Garda (BS): the couple was then placed under house arrest at their home in the province of Cuneo at the disposal of the Judicial Authority.
