Friedrich Andreoni for Pesaro for 2024

The third episode of the project opens on Friday 26 April at 6.30pm Pesaro 2024 – Italian capital of culture’From sculptures in the city to community art‘ curated by Marcello Smarrelli, which involves i 12 Neighborhoods and the Municipality of Monteciccardodeveloping the thematic fulcrum relationship between the arts and public space.

The protagonist is the District 2 – Cinque Torri – Santa Veneranda which reveals to the city Arco, Archè, Archetipo, the intervention of Friedrich Andreoniedited by Caterina Angelucci, which presents itself through a real itinerary three installations site-specific: Mnemonic traces, Mnemonic traces I and II, Archè. Dialoguing with the popular, historical-artistic and landscape tradition of the area, these are conceived as activators of the neighborhood’s memory. Without altering the connotations, the artist reveals and reveals its preciousness through a process of abstraction and sublimation, aimed at the ‘re-discovery’ of an already known place, now filtered from a new point of view. The choice of the title of the project is a poetic license by the artist, who chooses to ‘decline’ on the basis of an assonance Arco, Archè and Archetipo. For Andreoni, the paradigm constitutes the origin of research, a module which, if manipulated, reveals the unexpressed potential of the elements.

The appointment is at Santa Veneranda wash house (Fonte Maiano road 1). The artist will be present Friedrich Andreoni, Caterina Angelucci project curator, Giordano Tamanti president of District 2 – Cinque Torri – Santa Veneranda.

Tracce mnemonica is a sound installation located inside the Lavatoio di Santa Veneranda. Immersed in water, the speakers spread the melody of Petit solemn masses by Gioachino Rossini, composed in 1863, five years before his death. The work was the last of the composer from Pesaro, among the most famous in the history of music, and is considered his spiritual testament so much so that, in an alternation between church music and profane music, Rossini asks God to be granted heaven. With Mnemonic traces Andreoni fits into the landscape and existing architecture, reflecting on the original value of the wash housewhose source was known since the III-II centuries BC (Lex Flaminia De Agro Gallico et Piceno viritim dividundo232 BC) for its therapeutic properties: in a temporal short circuit, water becomes the medium of contact with history and melody the traces of the memories it holds beyond the world.

With Tmemory banks I and IItwo flags are installed at the entrance to the Santa Veneranda District, on their cloth is printed the spectrogram of the sound sample that reproduces Rossini’s Petit messe solennelle. Closely linked to Mnemonic Traces, the work uses the flag as an identity symbol to give new form to the universal memories retained by the washhouse fountain. Through the intervention of the artist, the sound is sublimated in color and shape, becoming an abstract image.

Concludes the itinerary Archeone iron profile sculpture composed of five pointed arches six meters high which reflect the shape of the cross fade equal powerinstalled in the hills between Santa Veneranda and Cinque Torri, totally immersed in the natural element. Starting from the etymology of the Greek word archè, ‘origin’, Andreoni is inspired by the so-called Boscovich Anemoscope, a disc of Lunense marble dating back to the 2nd century AD, now preserved in the Oliveriano Archaeological Museum of Pesaro: broken into two pieces on the upper face presents the planisphere, while on the thickness one the Greek names, transliterated into Latin, of twelve winds. For Friedrich Andreoni, Archè is a circular dance, a repeated motion that always begins and ends in the same point, so much so that its origin is confused. The apparent movement of the strings, five like the characters in The Dance by Henri Matisse (1909), oscillates in the continuous repetition of the same motif, whose volumes inhabit the memory of places and time.

Friedrich Andreoni (Pesaro, 1995)
He is an Italian artist who grew up between Italy and the Middle East. In 2020 he graduated from the Weißensee Academy of Art in Berlin and won the DAAD – German Academic Exchange Service scholarship thanks to which he carried out research at the Sound department of the School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Since 2018 Andreoni has been a member of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German Academic Scholarship Foundation). Recently his project SHIFT (2021-22) was presented within the official program of the fourth Chicago Architecture Biennial The Available City and received the special mention for the Prize of the Pontifical Vatican Academies – Virtuosi del Pantheon, as the only artist visual between different architectural firms. In 2023 he won the Ducato Art Prize for the Academy section. In 2024, he participates in the first edition of the WONDERFUL residency! Art Research Program 2024 at the Museo Novecento in Florence. At the moment Friedrich Andreoni is Meisterschüler of the artist Susan Philipsz in Dresden (Germany).

Caterina Angelucci (Urbino, 1995)
She is an independent journalist and curator, graduated in Modern Literature with a specialization in Archeology and Art History at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan. In 2021 you founded the artist residency Lido La Fortuna (Associazione Lido Contemporaneo, Fano, PU) and you are part of the Endless Residency research group started by Viafarini (Milan), recipient of the Grant Italian Council X edition. In 2023 you published Endless Residency for postmedia books. She is an observatory on artistic mobility and since 2024 she has been part of the Artribune editorial team.

From sculptures in the city to community art
‘Arco, Archè, Archetipo’ constitutes the third of the thirteen episodes that make up the Pesaro 2024 project ‘From sculptures in the city to community art‘ edited by Marcello Smarrelli, who is born from the historical memory of Arnaldo Pomodoro’s exhibition ‘Sculptures in the city’ (1971), a milestone in the debate on art in public space and a fundamental stage for the contemporary identity of Pesaro. Among the most iconic of the dossier, the project relocates the city at the center of cultural strategies relating to urban regeneration involving over 40 subjects including artists, authors and curators, questioning what Pesaro is and what it wants to become. The project saw the activation of 12 artistic residencies in the neighborhoods and municipality of Monteciccardo, with 12 artists and authors of different backgrounds and generations appointed ‘Ambassadors of art’, supported by the same number of curators, and the creation of the exhibition at the Pescheria Visual Arts Centre, ‘Sculptures in the city 1971/2024. From the public art of Arnaldo Pomodoro to the urban space of ten young authors’ (4 February – 5 May 2024). The residencies were an opportunity to establish an active dialogue with citizens and the territory, with the aim of promoting artistic co-creation paths aimed at the production of 12 permanent and site-specific works of art, whose location is strictly shared with citizens. The result of over a year of work, the works created represent the testimony of a path that allows to tell for the first time – through the language of art – the micro and macro stories that characterize the Neighborhoods giving visibility also to what is outside the ‘centre’.
