MODICA – Lo historic fruit and vegetable marketright in the center of the Viale Medaglie d’Oro district, it won’t be there anymore. In its place an urban park will be built, which will redevelop the area thanks to a project financed with i Pnrr funds.
Without a doubt, this is an important choice by the municipal administration of Modica, which will allow giving new life to an important area of the city. In fact, in the last period the market, precisely due to its location, had been reduced to hosting only four companies, losing the bargaining power of the past.
According to the first information provided by the mayor, Maria Monisteriand by the councilor for public works, Antonio Drago, the works will be delivered to the contractor today. In fact, the first part of the financing has arrived and therefore we can start with the work.
The former fruit and vegetable market will be redeveloped with Pnrr funds
The redevelopment of the market falls within the Pnrr urban regeneration funds with a total amount of 800 thousand euros. This project, explains Maria Monisteri, “is part of the overall redevelopment project of the city”. In fact, thanks to these funds, several sites in Modica are being redeveloped: Piazza Mediterraneo in Marina, the Palazzo Denaro-Papa in Modica Alta, the Albergo dei Poveri, the Palazzo Campailla and the Palazzo degli Studi.
Making the city increasingly human and welcoming
The redevelopment project represents, without a doubt, a fundamental step for the rebirth of the city, in fact the objective pursued by the administration is to make the city increasingly human and welcomingthis explains the councilor for public works, Antonio Drago, “reflects our political vision oriented towards the well-being of citizens and the recovery of historic areas”.
A new green lung will arise
In place of the market there will be a new green lung, a space to encourage socialization and sharing. A new agora, which will allow citizens to reclaim urban spaces with spaces on a human scale. The administration wants to make “the city more livable and inclusive for everyone” adds Antonio Drago.
Certainly, the city of Modica, thanks to the Pnrr funds has taken the path of regeneration and rebirth of existing areas. “I believe – adds Antonio Drago – that this new green space has all the requirements to become a privileged place for young people”.
After 75 years, this area from an economic agora with the fruit and vegetable market will be reborn to a new life to become a space for social aggregation. Certainly the dealers present in the market, having been notified in advance, had no difficulty in leaving the historic headquarters and heading towards other shores: two made an agreement with the nearby fruit and vegetable market of Ragusa and two organized themselves with private warehouses.
An urban park, with spaces intended for play, outdoor sports and services
According to the designer Federica Cavallo, the new green area, which will be created right in the centre, will be transformed into an urban park, with spaces intended for games, outdoor sports and services. The works have been entrusted to AegiSpadaro Srl of Rosolini and will last just under a year and a half. In this way the area will be a new presentation image of the city given that it is located in one of the entrances. The work will be created in compliance with a green transition and will greatly improve the quality of life in the neighborhood. The design concept follows the orography of the surrounding quarry, the path flows between framed trees that recall the vegetable gardens of Fiumara and the colors of the old market.
Farewell to the Modica fruit and vegetable market he had no difficulties, because the idea of having a new green area, rather than a degraded area, was very successful. The idea of changing the intended use of the area dates back to the previous Abbate administration, which now, thanks to the work of the Monisteri council, is preparing to become a construction site and in a short time will be a point of reference for those who live in the neighborhood and beyond.
