Trapani, overcrowded elderly home: the Nas close it

Elderly people forced to live in narrow spaces, even 3 or 4 of them in a room of just 10 metres, without a wardrobe, with only one bedside table and one who slept on a camp bed.

This is what the Nas of Palermo have ascertained, which is why the closure of the “Casa della Serenità” in Via della Terra in Trapani has now been ordered. A house in the retirement community that could accommodate a maximum of 8 guests, but where too often it went beyond that. In February there were 12 and in April 13.

The first check was carried out by municipal police officers, at the request of the Municipal Social Services. It was February and in addition to 4 more elderly people, it was also ascertained that the staff were using a bathroom accessible from a room where elderly people were staying. Then in mid-April, another raid, this time by the Nas, and the police found 13 guests in cramped spaces, some even in rooms of just a few square meters and forced to stay even without a wardrobe and with only one bedside table. With personal effects on the floor, inside a plastic bag.

For the Municipality, therefore, the limit was exceeded and, thus, the order arrived requiring the immediate cessation of the activity and its closure as the owner had been subjected to “multiple high administrative sanctions which place the burden on the transgressor an attitude dedicated to breaking laws, regulations and behavioral norms”.
