in Reggino 27 municipalities to vote

REGGIO CALABRIA Twenty-seven municipalities voted for a total of 89,405 voters in the area of the province of Reggio Calabria. In the local elections on 8 and 9 June, which will simultaneously see voting for the European elections, people will vote in Agnana Calabra, Ardore, Bagaladi, Benestrare, Bivongi, Bova Marina, Canolo, Cardeto, Cittanova, Feroleto della Chiesa, Gerace, Gioia Tauro , Laureana di Borrello, Martone, Monastarace, Oppido Mamertina, Portigliola, Riace, Rizziconi, Roccella Ionica, San Giovanni di Gerace, San Lorenzo, San Luca, Sant’Alessio in Aspromonte, Sant’Ilario dello Ionio, Scido and Stignano. Among these, the “special cases” are those of Portigliola, a police station for mafia infiltration in 2022; Commissioners have also been in place for a few months in Ardore and San Lorenzo, following the resignation of part of the administrations. In Gerace we vote in advance after the death in June 2023 of the mayor Giuseppe Pezzimenti, currently at the helm is the acting Salvatore Galluzzo. While Gioia Tauro is the only municipality in Reggio with more than 15 thousand inhabitants voting and where therefore a run-off is expected.

In Portigliola we vote after the dissolution due to the mafia

The Municipality of Portigliola was dissolved in May 2022 due to alleged infiltration by the ‘Ndrangheta. The then mayor, Rocco Luglio, was especially targeted by the investigations, «whose functions – as reported in the prefectural report – went beyond the political-administrative skills of the office he held, effectively summarizing in his person the overall and personalistic management of the local authority”. At the basis of the reasons for the dissolution were the «forms of interference by organized crime which compromise the free determination and impartiality of the elective bodies, the good performance of the administration and the functioning of the services, with serious prejudice to the public order and safety”. Now, after two years of commissioner management, they will return to choosing the citizens.

San Luca still without candidates

Just as the inhabitants of San Luca should go back to voting. The conditional is dictated by the fact that at the moment there are no candidates and there is the hypothesis that the current mayor, Bruno Bartolo, will not run again. He should dissolve the reservation during the next city council meeting. Meanwhile, time is ticking, the deadline for presenting candidates and lists is May 11th.
