World Earth Day in L’Aquila. Budget and relaunch!

World Earth Day also took place in our city of L’Aquila; last Monday, April 22nd.

This year’s slogan was: “60×40, the challenge”; that is: the desire to reduce the use of plastic by 60% by 2040. A great desire, given our current living standards!

The day opened at the “Dei ’99” theater with a brief greeting from a group of eco-marathon runners, who, making a stop in L’Aquila in their Keep Clean and Run, raised students’ awareness of the urgency of the protection of our common home.

This was followed by the theater show “Gaia”, with the participation of the “S. Mary of the Angels – Micarelli”; it – created by the local theater company – was kindly financed by the L’Aquilana Società Multiservizi and, for this reason, the Laudato si’ Community of L’Aquila-Trasacco feels the need to thank its president, the lawyer Lanfranco Massimi together with his editor Sonia Fiucci, for her generous availability.

Closing the morning was the speech of the young Miriam Resta-Corrado, a graduate in Environmental Sciences at the faculty of Lecce, who asked the students about the high value of the correct practice of separate waste collection.

The afternoon – starting from 4.30 pm – was dedicated to reflections with adults, in the “Benedetto XVI” auditorium of the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences “Fides et Ratio” in L’Aquila. The speakers were two professors from the University of L’Aquila: the mathematician Raffaele D’Ambrosio and the chemist Marcello Crucianelli; they have helped us to question ourselves about the harmony present on our planet, but also about the serious responsibility we all bear for its maintenance. The afternoon opened with the speech of the engineer Salvatore Perinetti, president of the Laudato si’ community of L’aquila-Trasacco; he presented the reality of the association and the path taken so far. The conclusions were entrusted to Brother Piero Sirianni.

We hope that these events will arouse in each and every one a lively desire to safeguard our common home; as well as being able to experience – increasingly numerous – other initiatives linked, always, to the protection of our universe.
