No solution to Trapani services. The redundancy fund has been extended

We are moving towards the extension of another two months of layoffs for the 40 workers of Trapani Servizi. This is what emerges from the meeting of the seventh commission with the Board of Directors of the company, which has been in “plant shutdown” since February. Since then, the company has used the “bilateral solidarity fund” as a tool that provides redundancy payments to workers suspended from work for reasons beyond the control of the company. A measure that is valid until May 5th, and which will now be renewed until July.

The extension of the social safety net will be discussed within the month between the company and the trade unions, as Trapani Servizi is currently still in a “plant shutdown” situation. In February, in fact, ARPA technicians carried out an inspection of the Gela landfill where the waste processed by Trapani Servizi was delivered, where, in turn, the unsorted waste arrived from 73 municipalities between the Trapani area and part of the Agrigento area and of the Palermo area.

The investigation by the Arpa technicians highlighted how the values of the waste, the waste processed, at Trapani Servizi did not comply with all the requirements established by current legislation. Thus, Gela closed the doors to waste coming from Trapani and the Region authorized all the Municipalities that previously brought unsorted waste to Trapani Servizi to take it to other landfills.

With those from the municipalities of the Trapani area having to arrive in Catania, with a significant increase in transport costs, all borne by the municipalities who, in the end, will have to pay compensation to the citizens. Which is why a significant increase in the next Tari is expected. In the first agreement signed for the redundancy fund extended to 40 employees, specifically 38 workers and 2 clerks, it was specified that “the company should return to full capacity and it is assumed that the existing critical issues will be overcome by May 5th”.

The desire to extend the social safety net for another two months suggests that the problems with the plants of the company 100% owned by the Municipality of Trapani would not have been overcome. The unions, then, during the meeting with the Board of Directors in February, had also put forward the request to “integrate workers’ remuneration, in order to guarantee remuneration similar to the salary”. A request that will probably be proposed again at the next bargaining table, scheduled before the natural deadline of May 5th.
