Miracle in Boscotrecase: innovative sight-saving surgery for a young man from Castellammare di Stabia

A young woman from Castellammare di Stabia experienced a miracle at the Boscotrecase hospital, under the guidance of the head of ophthalmology, Dr. Marco Verolino. Suffering from an advanced stage of keratoconus, her vision was seriously compromised, but thanks to an innovative surgery, she avoided losing her sight.

The intervention

The operation, directed by Dr. Verolino and supported by anesthetists led by Dr Emilio Di Caterino, averted corneal perforation thanks to a lamellar cornea transplant. This latest generation technique allows the selective replacement of the diseased corneal layer, minimizing the possibility of rejection and maximizing the success of the operation.

The surgical approach

Head doctor Verolino explains that this procedure differs from traditional transplantation, as it only replaces the part of the pathological tissue, leaving the remaining healthy cornea intact. This approach is particularly suitable for advanced cases of keratoconus that cannot be controlled with conventional therapies, representing the only solution to preserve vision.

A center of excellence

The general director of the ASL Napoli 3 Sud, Giuseppe Russo, underlines that the Boscotrecase hospital is a center of excellence for the treatment of eye diseases and is currently expanding its capabilities with the opening of new high-tech departments. The objective remains to guarantee the best possible assistance to citizens, offering innovative solutions to preserve visual health.
