Savona, former minister Fornero speaks to the students of Chiabrera Martini: the economy at the center of the discussion

Savona. This morning, April 23rd, there was a meeting at Sibilla dedicated to the students of the fourth classes of IChiabrera Martini institute for the Peses project organized by Professor Cottarelli to which Rotary contributed with classroom training for children.

Peses is the program promoted by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. A project that offers the opportunity to secondary school students from all over Italy to interact with experts from the recent Italian political scene.

The teacher was the special guest Elsa Forneroformer Minister of Labor and Social Policies of the Italian Republic, who spoke about economic and social sciences. The event aimed to offer students an extraordinary opportunity to exchange views with the protagonists of the recent Italian economic scene.

“We often hear adults say the phrase “I don’t understand anything about economics” and this is fine, no one is obliged to study it – states the former Minister – but we must know that theeconomy enters our daily lives, enters into the choices we make every day and enters as public choices because there is an important part of the economy that is determined or directed or changed by what the Government decides. So I don’t think that people need to be experts but understanding the fundamentals is important both to orient ourselves in individual choices and to choose who offers us the least illusory things on a political level. Everyone is capable of making promises, keeping them is much more difficult and sometimes voters are very disappointed by the fact that they are not kept and perhaps look for more illusory ones.”

The economy therefore has a double value – he continues – individually and as a community, exactly as it was for general literacy when it was decided that the Italian population had to know how to read and write. This is part of that minimum level of knowledge that improves the lives of individuals but also the collective life.”

A problem that emerged from the conference (and which a boy exposed) is that there is a lack of training in schools, economics is almost never talked about. Some students are intrigued by the subject (due to the fact that we live in a world where we now talk about nothing but financing or bitcoin) but they don’t know where to find information to study, learn and deepen their knowledge: “There is a great responsibility on the part of all communications because they should try to provide a minimum of neutral information – the professor explains to us – the information must therefore not reflect political preferences, but today in Italy this is difficult – she concludes -. At the same time, however, there are many books that try to popularize. We need to read more.”

The Rotary Club of Savona contributed, with training interventions carried out in the classes, to the preparation of today’s meeting with the former minister: “We held two meetings, together with Laura Demichelis, to talk about the basic concepts of financial education – he claims Alberto Becchi, Incoming president of the Rotary Club Savona – the kids were enthusiastic, many of them had never dealt with these topics and were therefore intrigued. These are not easy issues, they had to be prepared as much as possible.”

“We tried to make everything as active as possible by touching on different topics from how to save to why – concludes Becchi – with particular attention to the various solicitations that exist”.
