CAMPOBASSO – Businesses decreasing in the first quarter of the year in Molise. Terminations are decreasing but the dynamics of new openings remains weak. Traditional sectors in decline

Between January and March 2024, the balance between openings and closures of economic activities for our region stood at -267 units, a negative value lower than the same quarter a year ago, but still higher than the average of the last decade (- 218 companies). In percentage terms, the local entrepreneurial fabric shows a negative change of -0.80%: a worse value than the national one (-0.18%) and in line with the trend shown a year ago (-0.81% ).

When evaluating the data for the first quarter of the year, it is however important to consider that, historically, this period frequently records negative balances, mainly due to the concentration of a high number of business closures at the end of the year. A phenomenon of a technical-administrative nature which extends its effects on the Chamber archives even into the first weeks of the new year, influencing the data for the first quarter.

In any case, the balance of the quarter recorded is the result of a double decrease: on the one hand the cancellations, which went from 719 units in the same period a year ago to 699 companies at the end of March 2024; on the other hand, registrations, equal to 432, decreased by 9 units compared to the previous year. What is particularly worrying, therefore, is the dynamics of the opening of new businesses which continue to decrease and show no reversal in the trend.

The start-up balance of the year had greater repercussions especially on individual businesses, which recorded a decrease of 275 units compared to the end of December (-1.33%). The decrease in partnerships was less significant both in absolute terms, with a reduction of 34 units, and in relative terms (-1.06%). Positive note from joint-stock companies which recorded growth of 43 units in the first three months of the year (+0.51%).

During the first quarter of 2024 very few were i sectors which have shown growth (only real estate activities and education), while many have seen a reduction in their scope. Agriculture (-128 companies, -1.44% percentage change compared to December 2023), together with Commerce (-98, -1.40%), Accommodation and catering services activities (-47 companies, -1, 99%), Construction (34, -0.84%) and Manufacturing Activities (-32, -1.45%), the most significant sectors in the region, stood out for a decrease in the entrepreneurial structure.

In territorial terms, all four of the main macro-divisions of the nation recorded negative balances, with the Center notable for the smallest decline in the quarter (-0.11% against the average of -0.18%) and the South and the Islands for better stability compared to the same period of the previous year: -0.16% this year versus -0.15% last year. Among the regions, only Lazio and Basilicata recorded a positive balance, of 993 and 32 companies respectively. On the contrary, Piedmont (-1,934 units) and Veneto (-1,518) experienced the most significant reductions in absolute terms.
