The controversy on April 25th, on the missed appearance on TV by the writer Antonio Scurati, who took the initiative from the Matteotti crime to celebrate the Liberationthey give the opportunity to Elena Matteotti, Grandchild of the socialist deputy murdered by fascist violence, to make a appeal. «I ask the government but also all the other political forces for a clear message for April 25th – says Elena – a message against any regurgitation of oppression and in favor of tolerance and freedom of expression.” He continues: «I lived a part of my life without the why I didn’t talk about this important and explosive past – he says – with my parents or even with my sister. Now though I’m recovering this memorythis on April 25th and the 10 June (date marking 100 years since the murder of the Polesine deputy, ed.) I will be at Fratta Polesine». In the municipality in the province of Rovigo there is the home–museum in the house in via Ruga where the socialist deputy spent most of his life with his family: now it is closed to be rearranged in view of the centenary anniversary.
Appointments in Venice and Padua
But in all the municipalities of Veneto, as throughout Italy, this year too the celebrations of the feast of Liberation from Nazi-fascism. The Anpi has issued a busy calendar of commitments, all the provincial sections will be present with the citizens to remember the sacrifice of the partisans. The main events will take place, as usual, at Venice, between Piazza San Marco, starting at 9.15am, and campo del Ghetto Nuovo, at 12.15pm, and in Mestre, between Piazza Municipio and Piazza Ferretto, starting at 10.15am. TO Padua the appointment is at 10.30 in via VIII February in front of Palazzo Moroni, where the rector Daniela Mapelli will also speak. In the afternoon there will be a closely watched procession from the Catai social center which, together with young Palestinians, will march from the station to Piazza delle Erbe at 4pm, linking the theme of Resistance and Liberation to the battle for the recognition of the rights of the defenseless population of Gaza. It will be a procession controlled by the police, given that the activists are the same ones who call for a boycott of the contracts of Italian universities with Israeli ones and who occupied the Bo last week. Also in the Padua area, celebrations are also planned Masera of Padua, where the mayor recently voted against the opposition’s motion to take away citizenship from Mussolini and give it instead to Matteotti. «We too will have a celebration to remember the victims of all wars» explains Gabriele Volponi (centre-right civic), thus avoiding taking a position on anti-fascism.
Risk of clashes in Vicenza
TO Vicenza on the morning of April 25th the appointment is for mass at 9.30 at the Temple of San Lorenzo and then the official ceremony in Piazza dei Signori with the official oration by Giorgio Sala, former mayor of Vicenza from 1962 to 1975. 200 meters from the square of the Lords there will be one demonstration of the Bocciodromo social center which will give life to the procession against the genocide of the innocent victims of Gaza. The risk of tension is high because in via Santi Felice e Fortunato the neo-fascist garrison of Italian Social Movement (founded last year) declared that it intends to keep the headquarters open all day: «We, on April 25th in Vicenza, do not celebrate it because, as per our tradition, we don’t recognize ourselves in the Resistance – declared the founder Gian Luca Deghenghi – We will make our headquarters available to those who want to join our militant group in a symbolic distancing from the meaning of the anniversary, and in the rejection of the nagging and mystifying resistance rhetoric that takes hold of it”.
Schio, Verona and Treviso
April 25th has an important meaning to Schioa land that recalls the famous massacre occurred on 6 and 7 July 1945, when a group of partisans opened fire on prisoners in prison and 54 people were killed. Here the celebrations for the seventy-ninth anniversary of the Liberation will take place at 8.15 am with the ceremony in Piazza Cesare Battisti and at 5 pm with the oration to the Fallen Movement. TO Verona the celebrations for April 25th last two weeks with exhibitions and book presentations. The day of April 25th begins at 9.45 with the gathering in Piazza Bra. The flag raising and the laying of three will follow at 10am crowns at the foot of the monument to the fallen of all wars, the monument to the Partisan and the plaque of those deported to the extermination camps. TO Treviso the remembrance, with mayor and authorities, will take place as always under the Palazzo dei Trecento.
