The institutional representatives of the League, who have always been close to the workers operating within the Trento prison, have in the last month gathered the increase in the already profound uneasiness that already exists and expressed by the various trade unions. The councilors Mirko Bisesti and Stefania Segnana, thanks also to the support of the Trentino parliamentarians, the deputy Vanessa Cattoi and the senator Elena Testor, therefore took steps to organize a meeting with the undersecretary of Justice Andrea Ostellari, who promptly responded to the request with today’s visit to Trentino and a meeting with trade union representatives in the presence of President Maurizio Fugatti.

The visit of the undersecretary to meet with the operators and explain the actions underway by the Government was much appreciated. First of all, the conclusion of the competition phase for the staff of the educational sector, which for Trento from 2 people has now been brought to full staff with 6 operators, active in providing a vast range of training and rehabilitation offers for prisoners. In addition also the 5 million allocated for 2024 by the Government, for prevention activities to deal with the phenomenon of suicides, with the strengthening of psychological assistance services in prisons. The arrival of new agents to support those already operational is also expected by the end of the year.

In the morning the councilors and parliamentarians had visited the prison of Trento, meeting the staff and being able to verify the contingent situation: among the main problems reported, first of all the conspicuous shortage of personnel among the prison police officers, as well as a strong internal mobility, with continuous movement of agents to other locations and consequent replacements. Another main problem is the increase in the number of prisoners, which from the 240 foreseen in the original project are now over 380, with the forecast of a maximum ceiling of 418 people; the situation, combined with the lack of staff, therefore leaves the prison at risk of explosive situations, as occurred recently, with extensive damage caused to the structures by a group of agitated prisoners. The delegation then met both the operators of the educational sector and those of the internal health service, involved in supporting the penitentiary police officers in the care of prisoners.

The institutional representatives of the Trentino League, in meeting the representatives of the trade unions and discussing the prospects and commitments at the respective institutional levels, confirm their full commitment in supporting the operators of such a delicate branch of the public service for the collective good of Trentino .
