The investigation was launched with the aim of stemming the situation the escalation of car thefts, which occurred in the Bari hinterland during the spring of 2023; criminal phenomenon amplified, moreover, by the viral spread of a video on social mediawhich documented the theft of a car, in broad daylight, on the seafront of Holy spirit.
The investigative actions made up of stalking, electronic tailing and video surveillance made it possible to identify a solid criminal groupwith a single control room, specialized in the theft and recycling of cars, even of the latest generation, which could also count on logistical bases, inside which he hid the cars, even large ones, used to carry out the thefts. And then, frequency inhibitors, the so-called “jammers”, and tools suitable for burglary.
At first, the investigations were concentrated in the Bitonto campaigns, where cars were stolen and then “cannibalized” in just a few minutes. The identification and seizure was fundamental, in a building including a house with annex industrial building fenced, of aAudi RS3 black in colour, having the same characteristics as a car which has escaped police checks several times, even through dangerous chases. The car was later found to be theft, with a counterfeit chassis number.
