Messina: Tomorrow “LoveSafe Night”: Education and Prevention for Safe Sexuality

April 24, 2024 will mark an important date for the youth community of Messina thanks to “LoveSafe Night”, a one-of-a-kind event that will be held at the renowned Centro Multiculturale Officina. The initiative, born from the collaboration between the students of the course “Psychological well-being and mental health in organisations” of the University of Messina and various local associations, aims to raise awareness among young people about correct and safe sexual behaviour, combining moments of light-heartedness and fun with important social messages.

Under the guidance of prof. Alessandro De Carlo, teacher of the Master’s Degree Course in Clinical and Health Psychology in the Life Cycle, the students created an event capable of capturing the attention of their peers and transmitting crucial information on sexual health. “LoveSafe Night” aims to educate and inform young people about safe sexual practices, underlining the importance of prevention from sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and promoting responsible behavior.

Fundamental to the success of the initiative was the contribution of associations such as the Italian Red Cross and Arcigay Messina, which have always been at the forefront of prevention and continuous training on these issues. Their experience and expertise enriched the project, ensuring the quality and accuracy of the information provided. Furthermore, the event received the support of Crash3D, a digital communication and press agency, and I Parenti, a well-known local restaurant business, demonstrating the interest and commitment of the local community towards these important issues.

During the evening, participants will receive information gadgets, including condoms with QR codes that will allow them to access online resources dedicated to safe sex and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This innovative technological solution will allow young people to delve deeper into the topics addressed even after the event, encouraging continuous and independent learning.

Another central element of “LoveSafe Night” will be the reflection on sexual consent, a topic of great relevance and importance. The phrase “No always means No”, printed on the portfolios distributed during the evening, aims to stimulate an open and honest discussion on this topic, reminding all participants of everyone’s right to freely express their consent or dissent in sexual matters.

The ultimate goal of “LoveSafe Night” is to encourage safe relationships, foster greater awareness of the risks and consequences of STIs, and educate about the importance of consent in sexuality. Through an innovative and engaging approach, the event aims to overcome the taboos and barriers that often prevent young people from openly addressing these issues, creating an opportunity for discussion and personal growth.
