Legambiente reveals that Brescia is among the eight Italian cities above the limits for Pm10.

Brescia: what the data provided by Legambiente reveal

This was revealed by Legambiente data on the occasion of the 54th Earth Day which is celebrated today (Monday 22 April 2024). The data comes from the Mal’Aria di città 2024 report in which the 2023 data in the provincial capitals were analysed, both in terms of the levels of fine particles (PM10, PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

In summary, 18 cities out of the 98 monitored exceeded the current regulatory limits for PM10 exceedances (35 days a year with a daily average above 50 micrograms/cubic meter). There were 29 cities outlawed in 2022 and 31 in 2021.

Dominating the ranking of cities is Frosinone (with the Frosinone Scalo control unit) with 70 days of overrun, double compared to the permitted values, followed by Turin (Grassi) with 66, Treviso (strada S. Agnese) 63 and Mantua (via Ariosto), Padua (Arcella) and Venice (via Beccaria) with 62. The three Venetian cities, Rovigo (Centro), Verona (B.go Milano), and Vicenza (Ferrovieri), also exceed 50 days, respectively 55 , 55 and 53. Milan (Senate) records 49 days, Asti (Baussano) 47, Cremona (P.zza Cadorna) 46, Lodi (V.le Vignati) 43, Brescia (Serene Village) and Monza (via Machiavelli) 40. The list closes with Alessandria (D’Annunzio) with 39, Naples (Pellerini Hospital) and Ferrara (Isonzo) with 36.

The eight cities that exceeded the limits for PM10

The eight cities are Verona (Borgo Milano) with 44 days of overruns in the first 91 days of the year, followed by Vicenza (San Felice) with 41, Padua (Arcella) 39, Frosinone (scalo) 38, Brescia (Serene Village)Cremona (Piazza Cadorna), Turin (Grassi) and Venice (Via Beccaria) with 36. At the limit Treviso (Via Lancieri) with 35 days of overrun, Modena (Giardini), Milan (Senato), Monza (Via Machiavelli), Rovigo (Center) 34.

In perspective

Italian cities, from North to South, still present considerable delays compared to the more stringent values proposed by the revision of the European Directive on air quality which will come into force from 2030 (20 µg/m3 for PM10, 10 µg/m3 for PM2.5 and 20 µg/m3 for NO2).
