Caserta – The term “diabetes” was coined by Aretaeus of Cappadocia (81-133 AD). In ancient Greek the verb diabainein means “to cross” alluding to the flow of water since the most striking symptom is excessive urine production. The suffix mellitus (from the Latin mel: honey, sweet) was added by the Englishman Thomas Willis in 1675 due to the fact that the urine and blood of diabetic patients had a sweet taste. An important Congress on Diabetes will be held tomorrow, April 23, 2024, at the Medical Association of Caserta, entitled “TYPE 2 DIABETES…. NOT JUST HYPERGLYCEMIA” under the aegis of SUMAI (Single Italian Outpatient Medicine Union). This scientific meeting, thanks to the President of the Congress Dr. Emilio Luigi Scalzone and the Scientific Coordinator Dr. Andrea Del Buono, aims to activate translation programs that allow, through a synergistic action of all the operators in the sector involved in the treatment of this pathology, to transform scientific evidence into clinical and appropriate therapeutics. The rationale for this Congress is therefore to deepen and update the current knowledge of prevention of diabetes complications, with maximum interactivity between the various medical specialists, examining the epidemiology and pathogenesis of diabetes complications, the possible mechanisms of action in proven prevention, the comparison of different therapeutic approaches, the possible advantages of early and more generalized use. The need to consider prevention as the cornerstone of action in the diabetes field is based on the awareness that this is the only path forward from the perspective of the sustainability of the human and social costs of this disease.
