Coldiretti alarm: agricultural land is drastically reduced in Puglia – Pugliapress
Descriptive text here

The land consumption in Puglia it is a growing challenge that directly threatens food security and the ecological balance of the region. According to the latest report from Coldiretti Puglia, in just one year, another 718 hectares of precious agricultural land have been “eaten” by abandonment and overbuilding, including ground-mounted photovoltaic systems. This phenomenon not only alters the morphology of the landscape but also threatens the historical agricultural vocation of the area.

As a result of climate change, the land consumption in Puglia it had a devastating impact on production capacity. In 2023, the region recorded a 34% loss of agricultural production, a figure that sounds the alarm for future generations of farmers. These extreme events, which include hailstorms, frosts and droughts, amplify the risk of hydrogeological instability which affects most of the municipalities in the region.

The energy multifunctionality of photovoltaic systems could offer a partial solution, limiting the installation of such structures to a maximum of 5% of the company surface area and favoring marginal areas. This approach would reduce the visual and physical impact on the landscape, conserving more land for agriculture.

In addition, Coldiretti Puglia underlines the importance of accelerating the approval of the law on land consumption, awaited for decades. This law could provide crucial tools for the protection of the territory, integrating policies for the maintenance, saving and recycling of water resources essential for agriculture.
