The knot, in the end, was untied: Stefano Bonaccini he will run for the European elections as the leader in the North-East constituency. The announcement came jointly from the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, and by a video released on social networks by the governor of Emilia-Romagna. “Today nothing ends, today is a new beginning – said Bonaccini -. We still have a long way to go together. We cannot hand over Europe, from my point of view, to those who think they can isolate Italy from the rest of the world, to those who want to raise and build walls and helplessly watch wars as if they didn’t concern us too, to those who deny the climate change, or to those who protest without having acted with competence and ability at the time the decisions were made”.
The elections
The communication arrived from Viale Aldo Moro was followed by numerous messages of support, from some colleagues of the Democratic Party, but also messages of dissent, such as those from Lega and Fratelli d’Italia. Marta Evangelistigroup leader of FdI in the Legislative Assembly, asked for “immediate resignation”, leaving citizens the possibility “of returning to the polls in the shortest possible time”.
The decision on the day of the vote could depend precisely on the fate of the Brothers of Italy. For now, as Il Resto del Carlino writes, the most plausible date seems to be Sunday 24 November. Bonaccini himself, in the video, said that he will vote in the autumn. However, the date could be postponed: earlier than November or later, perhaps at the beginning of 2025. Much will depend on the results of the European elections: the centre-right could push for an early vote in the event of excellent results in the European elections 8 and 9 June. In the event of the opposite scenario, there could instead be a request to postpone the vote, although for the moment this hypothesis appears less likely.
