The Giro d’Italia in Superga, Torino fans protest – Cycling

“Climbing to Superga is our right, the Giro must change its route.” So read one of the banners that appeared last night in Turin signed by the ‘Resistenza Granata 1906’ group. The ultras contest the decision that the first stage of the Giro d’Italia, which will start on May 4th starting from Venaria Reale, will move to Superga on the day of the 75th anniversary of the Grande Torino tragedy.

The protest arises from the fact that, due to the cycling event, the roads leading to the Turin hill will be closed to traffic, and therefore it will not be easy for the Granata faithful to reach the Basilica for the traditional commemoration.

The president of Toro Urbano Cairo is in the sights of the fans: “Showing down those who challenge you is your biggest celebration”, reads another banner, in reference to the last ones warned in the Maratona corner, and again “Uc go away” and “We want another Pianelli”, thus remembering the last president who won the Serie A championship in 1976. “Never accomplices of those who are taking everything away from us”, we finally read in a post on the social page of the Granata Resistances, in which the photo of the banners.

At the beginning of April the fans had written a letter addressed, in addition to the regional and municipal Sports councilors, to the mayor Stefano Lo Russo and to the president of the Region Alberto Cirio in which they asked “in order to avoid possible serious problems, including public, to request the organizers of the Giro d’Italia to change the route of the stage on May 4th”.
