Ten arrests were made by the Carabinieri of the Bari Provincial Command in an anti-drug operation in Altamura, in an investigation coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate. Nine suspects are believed to belong to a criminal association specialized in drug trafficking and another is under investigation for possession for the purpose of drug dealing.
The investigations, conducted from November 2020 to April 2021 by the operational section of the Altamura Company, reconstructed an association headed by a 51-year-old and started from the damage to cars and a threatening writing made on the wall of a house “you owe the material take from us.” The investigative activities made it possible to ascertain that the intimidating action was the consequence of debts accumulated precisely in the context of drug trafficking.
In particular, the existence of a criminal association aimed at drug trafficking based on a criminal group also linked by family relationships was ascertained. The structure was made up of a boss, organizers of the drug dealing activity, custodians and pushers and a coded language was used. For example, in the interceptions, expressions such as “the sandwiches are being made there”, “it’s not like there is a kilo of healthy bread”, “we have to keep kneading the sandwiches and all the dough… now let’s see what he can do and we’ll cut him off in front quickly.” During the investigations, numerous sales of cocaine, hashish and marijuana were ascertained. The suspects also had access to weapons, ammunition and explosives.
