Benevento, clash on «Sant’Alfonso»: mayors against Morgante

Unanimously and enthusiastically welcomed by the Conference of Mayors, called to Mosti palacethe president’s proposal Clemente Mastella to request a hearing with the director general of «Rummo» Maria Morgante and, in case of no response, to all meet together in front of the hospital to meet her.

“The director of San Pio stated the mayor of the capital who did not participate in this meeting, it is not the first time this has happened and I repeat that it is an institutional disgrace, a deplorable attitude that cannot go unnoticed.

There is no dialogue with the hospital and therefore we don’t know how they want to deal with it critical issues. For this reason I believe it is necessary to wear the tricolor armbands and show up in front of the structure on Friday morning next week.” In his opinion «it is also important to arrange a meeting with the general managers of Asl and Rummo and ask managers for a semi-annual report to stay updated and find shared solutions. It is a fact that there are no doctors – he underlines – because the national health service pays less than private structures and professionals choose workplaces that offer better remuneration”.

The general director of «Rummo» did not attend the meeting but sent a document in which he reiterated «the full availability to guarantee support for the emergency room of Sant’Agata de’ Goti through an immediate reconnaissance of medical personnel available to carry out night shifts in the emergency room Saint Alphonsus“, highlighting that the choice would have “resulted in the renunciation of some activities within the department, until the next one April 28.

The situation has been defined Emergency roomthe strategic direction is already oriented towards strengthening the Internal Medicine, of long-term care and Physical medicine and rehabilitation, with an increase in the staffing of medical managers, through the completion of competitive procedures and within the three-year plan of personnel needs”.

The reactions

A document not shared by the mayor of Saint Agatha Salvatore Riccio. «If what was written in this letter was true, he underlined the Conference of the mayors would not have been called at all. The hospital has been totally weakened so we will continue our battle until the implementation of decree 41/2019 which provides for the full operation of the structure”.

In tune with Mastella and Riccio the mayors present. «The choice of Morgante he urged Nino Lombardi, mayor of Faicchio and president of Province not to participate in the meeting was not very polite towards the institutions. We must demand the implementation of the corporate act which, despite having been approved by both the hospital and the Regionis not yet in force.

The critical issues of healthcare in Sannio they affect all sectors because the less efficient local medicine, which should act as a filter, is, the more emergency medicine is affected, effectively undermining citizens’ right to health, enshrined in Constitution. The ASL’s decision to demedicalise ambulances is a further slap in the face of Sanni healthcare. Likewise, the Sant’Alfonso emergency room it is to be considered as a filter for the emergency departments of Rummo».

Also Pasquale Materamayor of Buccianoexpressed disappointment: «The regret for the manager’s non-participation, he said, is determined by the fact that any proposal we wanted to put forward would not find any response and would fall on deaf ears. In my opinion, it is also necessary to deal with the issue of 118, which is of interest to many mayors.”

«I wonder, he added Domenico Parisimayor of Limatola, what use could the Emergency room of Sant’Alfonso, given that the ambulances of 118 they don’t go there. Every now and then we meet up for the Conference of the mayors, we discuss but we are unable to do anything concrete. We must sign, if possible, a stringent document in relation to the Morgante and achieve the implementation of decree 41/2019».

He drew the conclusions Luca De Lipsis, municipal councilor with responsibility for healthcare: «I am a hospital doctor and we see ambulances coming from the Caudina valley every day. To keep the Sant’Agata emergency room we would need to have a CT room, operating rooms, radiology and resuscitation doctors which are not currently there. Without these essential components, the emergency room cannot exist.”

The meeting was also attended by a delegation from the “Civic Movement for the Hospital”, which presented documentation summarizing the preparatory acts for the implementation of the decree 41/2019: «All those present expressed the unanimous desire to ask for a fully functioning emergency room with the necessary departments behind it, in addition to the desire to move on to more incisive actions and to ask for a meeting with the president of the Region».

Finally, according to Giovanni Cacciano, provincial secretary of the Democratic Party, «territorial assistance is not in step with the needs of an aging population and with the gap between North and South because southern healthcare is always underfunded. Beyond sterile controversies regarding the presence or absence of DG Morgante, it would be effective to examine his detailed report from which all the efforts made emerge, despite the existing critical issues, and to team up to eliminate the gap affecting our healthcare ».
