Trento Film Festival: the programme, the guests, the films to see

A few days before the start72nd edition of the Trento Film Festivalthe most important Italian event dedicated to the mountains, not only in cinematographic guise. It will take place from April 26th to May 5th. An edition that promises to be heterogeneous and full of food for thought, proposing themes such as self-exploration, the fragility of the mountain and the new challenges it poses to man.

As usual, there were numerous notable guests. However, the lion’s share of the review goes to the projections: there are 120 films to see, divided into different sections: International Competition, Alp&Ism, Previews, Special Screenings, Terre Alte, Orizzonti Vicini and the titles dedicated to Ireland, guest country of this edition for “Destination…”. The Festival will open Oura El Jbel (Behind the mountains) of the Tunisian Mohamed Ben Attiawhile the closure is entrusted to Kinra-Motherland of the Peruvian Marco Panatonikalready winner of the Golden Astor for best film at Mar del Plata International Film Festival. In the 25 titles – including shorts and feature films – that compete for the Golden Gentian, the mountain will be told in the most diverse ways, from animation to experimentation, from fiction to documentary. As demonstrated by the Italians in the competition: from the original work on the archive images of a 1988 Antarctic expedition by “Terra Nova: the land of long shadows” by Lorenzo Pallotta, to the animation in the short “The Peak of Venture” by Mattia Tafel, to continue with the story of an astronomer in search of isolation in Italian-Swiss fiction “Signs of Life” by Leandro Picarella and that of a group of teenagers in the mountains in the province of Aosta “Bees” by Luca Ciriello, up to the documentary “Marmolada – Mother rock” by Cristiana Pecci and Matteo Maggi, a production Sky in absolute preview, on the opening of a new route, a human rather than competitive undertaking by four exceptional mountaineers such as Matteo Della Bordella, Massimo Faletti, Maurizio Giordani and the very young Iris Bielli.

In the section Alp&Ism, the Festival audience will find a wide selection of films about exceptional feats, where competitive emotion, adventure and exploration are accompanied by cinematic flair. In the section – featuring 25 films – many screenings will see the presence of the protagonists in the room, including: Tamara Lunger for “Petta Reddast” by Valentin Rapo, Hervé Barmasse for “Monte Corno – It seemed that I was in the air” by Luca Cococcetta, passing through the very strong climbers Edu Marin and Stefano Ghisolfi, respectively protagonists in “Keep It Burning” by Guillaume Broust ed “Excalibur” by Andrea Bandinelli, Niccolò Conterno and Diego Borello. In the program of Special screenings (12 titles, 10 feature films and 2 shorts) the tribute to Francesco Nuti with his film stands out “It’s All Heaven’s Fault”the preview of “The Experimental Age” by Marco Zingaretti, protagonist Erri De Luca who will be present together with Fausto De Stefani to explore the often taboo theme of the link between old age and frequenting the mountains. Of note is the restoration of “Gasherbrum” (The Shining Mountain) by Werner Herzog made 40 years ago with Reinhold Messner (present at the festival) and Hans Kammerlander and that of the silent film “Der Berg des Schicksals” (The mountain of destiny) by Arnold Fanck, which turns 100 and which, for the occasion, will be set to live music.

For events and meetings it will be up to Beppe Severgnini open the dance, with the lectio at the opening ceremony and the new show entitled “A slippery story”, which takes the audience on a journey through the change in our relationship with the mountains, particularly in the winter season. The relationship with the Alpine environment, through their respective and different adventures, will also speak Lorenzo Barone, Alex Bellini And Alessandro De Bertoliniwith Tamara Lunger as moderator. Whether by bicycle, on skis or by kayak, in their travels the three adventurers have always faced extreme, fascinating and difficult lands, in which what matters most is knowing the world to become explorers of themselves. The philosopher will address a similar theme Umberto Galimbertiwhich on the occasion of the centenary of Buonconsiglio Castle Museum, will talk about the hidden meaning behind the motto “Know thyself”. While in the section “Destination…”, this year, audiences will travel to theIrelandland of migrations and breathtaking landscapes, to discover theirishness, between cinema, literature and obviously music, with Cisco from the Modena City Ramblers who will play the hits of “Riportando tutto a casa”, thirty years after the album’s release. Furthermore, the Iranian climber Nasim Eshqia pioneer of female sport climbing in her country, will present the book “I was a rock, now I am a mountain”. At the center of the narrative will be Nasim’s personal journey, dictated by an intimate, yet public, struggle against the oppression of his government fought with mountaineering feats. A model from which many women can draw inspiration, in an environment – such as climbing – where, unlike other sports, the greatest difficulties have been achieved by both men and women. The theme will be at the center of the conference “9b+ feminine plural”, with some of the strongest representatives of female sport climbing, such as Wafaa Amerclimber of Egyptian origin, e Lucia Capovilla, multiple Paralympic champion.
