Great success at Vinitaly for PGI Chocolate from Modica

The participation of Modica PGI Chocolate in the 2024 edition of the Vinitaly International Wine and Spirits Exhibition was a success. There were four events at which the first and only European PGI chocolate was presented to the select Vinitaly audience to make itself known and appreciated in all its many characteristics.
Monday 15 April in the Talk Show Area of ​​the Palaexpo – MASAF Pavilion, at the conclusion of the round table organized by Assodistil and the National Grappa Consortium, on the theme “Relaunch of grappa. GI reform and recognition of the Consortia”, followed by the tasting of the 18 most representative Italian grappas, selected by the Italian Grappa Consortium. A particularly appreciated tasting both for the quality of the selected grappas and for the Modica PGI chocolate of different types and flavours, masterfully proposed in combination by the sommeliers Leonardo Pinto and Giorgio Solarino.
The tasting was attended by: Sebastiano Caffo President of the Italian Grappa Consortium and Nino Scivoletto Director of the Modica PGI Chocolate Consortium. The grappas were tasted: 1.Roner aged Gewürztraminer Grappa; 2 – Nannoni Grappe – Grappa di Brunello Riserva 3 years; 3. Nardini Grappa Riserva 7 Years Bortolo Nardini Selection*; 4.Sibona – Grappa Riserva aged in Porto barrels; 5. Bonaventura Maschio – Primeuve -Grappa 903 Riserva d’Autore; 6.Domenis Storica Nera 50th; 7.Montanaro – Grappa di Barolo Ometti 43°; 8. Bepi Tosolini – Grappa Agricola 50°; 9. Mazzetti D’Altavilla – “Le Origini, Vigna del Parroco” (Ruche grappa reserve); 10. Maxentia Distillery Grappa di Nosiola 42%; 11. Pezzi Distillery – Teroldego Grappa Trentina 40%; 12. Rossi D’Anaunia Distillery – 137 Barriques 41%; 13. Borgo Vecchio Distillery – Grappa Barrique 40%; 14.Maschio Beniamino – Grappa Brentè Riserva 36 months 42%; 15.Bonollo U. – Bonollo Of; 16. Rossi D’Angera – Personal Reserve; 17. Caffo- Unique Grappa from Calabria; 18. Mangilli – Mythical Grappa Mangilli.

At Sol Vinitaly, Tuesday 16th at 2.00 pm, Modica PGI Chocolate was the protagonist of the MENU’ IBLEO event, organized by the Free Municipal Consortium of Ragusa in collaboration with the Consortia: Monti Iblei Dop Oil, Ragusano Dop, Modica Chocolate PGI, New Carrot of Ispica PGI, Pachino Tomato PGI, Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG and Slow Food Ragusa. The Show Cooking area was sold out for the occasion. The Ibleo Menu was developed by Chef Claudio Ruta who expertly used all the excellent products of the south-east of Sicily, developing dishes that have received general appreciation. The event concluded with the tasting of “CHO” the first liqueur with Modica PGI Chocolate.
All those present were given a Modica PGI chocolate bar with wrapping dedicated to the event. Present: Patrizia Valenti, Extraordinary Commissioner of the Free Municipal Consortium of Ragusa; Dario Cartabellotta Director General of the Department of Agriculture, Luigi Polizzi, Director General of International and European Union Policies of MASAF; The Hon. brought his greetings. Luca Sammartino Councilor for Agriculture of the Sicilian Region. It is worth mentioning, among all the contributions offered for the organization of the event, Giuseppe Cianciolo, Official in charge of the Community Policies and Local Development Office for the Free Consortium, and the Technical Manager of the Monti Iblei DOP Oil Consortium, Umberto Godano.
At 4.00 pm, again on Tuesday 16 April, in the Pavilion of the Valpolicella Consortium, a fantastic and special tasting of Amarone della Valpolicella paired with the first and only Chocolate of Modica PGI, led by the Onav delegates of Verona, Francesco Galeone and Onav of Modica, Giorgio Solarino. Alberto Brunelli for the Valpolicella DOCG Consortium and Nino Scivoletto for the Modica PGI Chocolate Consortium presented their respective products.
The six prestigious labels being tasted: Tenuta Santa Maria di Gaetano Bertani – Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva 2017; Torre di Terzolan Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2017; Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2015; Easter Vineyards and Cellars NEVER SAY NEVER Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2015; Gerardo Cesari Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Bosan” 2015; Clementi Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2013.
The debate that developed at the end of each tasting on the satisfaction of the proposed pairings was interesting, among which the one with wild fennel received the greatest consensus. Also in this case, all participants were given Modica PGI chocolate bars with wrapping dedicated to the Verona event.
On Wednesday 17 April at 1.00 pm, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the UNESCO recognition of the “Practice of the sapling vine” of Pantelleria, the Regional Department of Agriculture of the Sicily Region, in collaboration with IRVO and the Modica PGI Chocolate Consortium, organized a tasting paired with Sicilian dessert wines. Speakers at the debate were: Gaetano Aprile General Director of the Regional Institute of Wine and Oil, Nicolò Poma oenologist of the Pantelleria DOC Consortium, Giuseppe Spata President of the Pantelleria City Council and Nino Scivoletto Director of the Modica PGI Chocolate Consortium. Gianni Giardina, IRVO winemaker and Giorgio Solarino, Onav Modica delegate, oversaw the tasting, proposing the following combinations: Moscato di Pantelleria DOC with 60% Modica PGI chocolate with almonds; Marsala Superiore Semisecco with 60% Modica PGI chocolate; Passito di Pantelleria Doc with 70% Modica PGI chocolate; Sicilian Passito with 60% Modica PGI chocolate and hazelnut.
The event concluded with the tasting of CHO, the first and only liqueur with Modica PGI Chocolate, whose characteristics were illustrated by sommelier Giorgio Solarino of Sol Barocco. The over sixty participants will receive a Modica PGI chocolate bar with wrapping dedicated to the event. The Director of the Consortium Nino Scivoletto gave the President of the City Council of Pantelleria the folder containing the stamp issued on 15 October 2020 by the Ministry of Economic Development to celebrate the PGI recognition of Modica chocolate, hoping for the start of a twinning between the DOC wines from Pantelleria and Modica PGI chocolate. Present were the municipal councilors of Pantelleria Giuseppe Maddalena and Mariangela Silvia.
The Director of the Consortium Nino Scivoletto, before leaving Vinitaly, visited Casa Coldiretti to meet the Director of Coldiretti of Verona Giuseppe Ruffini, together with Enrico Novarin Agrarian Consortium of the North East and Claudio Zambelli of the Children’s Village of Fiera Cavalli to evaluate the hypothesis of a participation of the Modica Chocolate Consortium in the 2024 edition of Fiera Cavalli, scheduled in Verona from 7 to 10 November
