A wave of discontent rose in Busto Arsizio afterwards to the increase in school canteen prices and the elimination of some benefits for families with multiple children. A measure that has sparked protests from many parents, worried about the economic impact that this decision could have on their family budgets, already put to the test by recent price increases in various sectors.

The Democratic party local has become the spokesperson for social hardship, placing himself in clear opposition to the management of services for the Right to Education adopted by the centre-right council. Already in the past, during the discussions on the budget and on the updating of the Single Programming Document, the PD had expressed its dissent by voting against the proposed measures.

In particular, the councillor Cinzia Berutti had raised criticism on the cuts made to the school transport service, highlighting the difficulties created for children in the suburbs, deprived of an essential connection to reach schools, such as the Pascoli and Galilei schools. The alarm also concerns the announced but not implemented cooking center for children aged 3 to 6, for which there are no updates.

The recent protest from the parents was also addressed by the councillor Valentina Verga, which underlined the economic repercussions of the administration’s choices on the lives of families, especially in a period of general inflation. The city secretary Paolo Pedotti also highlighted the disparity that the new tariffs could create between the different social strata, considering the decision retrograde and at odds with the principles of equality.

The opposition criticized the administration’s approach decided on the change in tariffs without prior dialogue with the parents’ committees, which were only heard in a posthumous meeting. Pedotti concludes with a severe judgment on the Council, considering it insufficient in guaranteeing the universality of the right to education and anticipates that the Democratic Party will present a solution proposal to the city council if the administration does not provide convincing answers.

In the meantime, parents await the meeting on April 23 with the competent councilor, hoping that shared solutions and a rapprochement between the parties will emerge for the good of the school community and the families of Busto Arsizio.
