04/19/2024 – The sky has transformed into a theater of natural beauty, surprising the inhabitants of our city with a phenomenon as fascinating as it is mysterious: an imposing luminous ring that surrounds the sun like a halo. This wonder is known as a “solar halo”, and it is an event that occurs only under particular atmospheric conditions.
Solar halos are rings of light that appear around the sun when its light is refracted through millions of ice crystals suspended in high clouds, such as cirrostratus clouds. These crystals act like prisms, diffusing light and creating a circle of colors that can vary from orange to blue, with a predominance of pastel shades.
The phenomenon gets its name from the angle of refraction, which is approximately 22 degrees. Despite the apparent proximity, the halo is not a phenomenon that occurs near the sun, but is the result of a play of lights and crystals found thousands of kilometers away from the Earth’s surface.
In addition to being a fascinating sight, sun halos are often used as weather indicators. The presence of such cirrostratus clouds may be a harbinger of a change in the weather, suggesting the arrival of an atmospheric disturbance in the next 24 to 48 hours.
For photography enthusiasts and sky watchers, the solar halo offers a unique opportunity to capture one of nature’s most picturesque spectacles. It is recommended that you do not look directly at the sun when attempting to observe or photograph the halo to avoid eye damage.
