TERAMO. Words are important, each one has a meaning and for this reason they must be chosen and each must be given due weight.” These are the words of the mayor of Teramo, Gianguido D’Alberto, who yesterday introduced the presentation of the new pendant created by the Abruzzo master goldsmith Giuliano Montaldi, inside a packed room of the Melchiorre Delfico Library in Teramo.
The meeting/conference was attended by a large group of students from the “Poppea Rozzi” high school in Teramo, who had the opportunity to attend a real local history lesson, thanks to the intervention of speakers who were able to attract their attention on themes that told an important story of Abruzzo.
Welcoming the public was the director Dimitri Bosi, together with his staff who guaranteed the success of the event down to the smallest detail.
The work was conducted by the journalist Antonio D’Amore, who moderated the interventions of the historian Elso Simone Serpentini, the rector of the University of Teramo, Dino Mastrocola, the anthropologist professors Ernesto Di Renzo and Alessandra Gasparroni, Filippo Flocco, fashion ambassador of ‘Abruzzo in the world, as well as the mayor D’Alberto who spoke right in front of the faithful reproduction of the cast of the ancient stone from which the story of the new pendant begins which tells an indelible page in the history of Abruzzo: “To speak take measures.”

“Don’t talk about gossips”, explained the historian Serpentini, going step by step through that ancient story of the end of the fourteenth century which saw two factions of the city antagonistic and which ended with the tragic death of thirteen exponents of the Melatino, remembered every time today you cross Porta Romana. “It is a warning that one makes, in the choice of words, which must be careful and thoughtful every time.”

At the intervention of the anthropologist Gasparroni, who reminded maestro Montaldi of when several years ago he invited him to tell such a singular story, which has been handed down from generation to generation and which underlined how Abruzzo remains a land rich in nature, fauna and unique culture, so much so as to once again be the protagonist of a film by Riccardo Milani which is enjoying great success, was echoed by that of his colleague Di Renzo, who retraced in stages the work of maestro Montaldi, defined as “a visionary” who speaks through his art.

“A skilled artist, Montaldi is not just a goldsmith,” said Professor Di Renzo, “his bracelet is a sort of kaleidoscope that weaves together everything that characterizes Abruzzo and everything that is part of the Abruzzo-ness. Both of what others are able to recognize, the strong icons linked to Abruzzo, think of the arrosticino, the sheepdog, the warrior of Capestrano, and those essences that are felt and narrated only by those who are from Abruzzo. Think about the choice to reproduce the leaves of beech trees and beechnuts. The beech forest is Abruzzo. And then the ferratella, the nevola. We could talk about it for a long time and tell about the grandmothers in the kitchens of us Abruzzo people”.

“I thank all the people who participated in this presentation”, concluded maestro Montaldi, “to the mayor of Teramo for having sponsored the initiative, to the rector of the University who honored us with his presence, demonstrating the closeness of the world that expresses and the director of the library who welcomed us into a wonderful cultural center in the heart of the city of Teramo. It gives me pride to know that our pendants, the symbol of Abruzzo, are in the jewelery shops of Teramo, even with a new creation, which tells a story that can be recognized in the identity of a people”.

Finally, Flocco closed the meeting and addressed the kids saying: “Bring our message to the new generations as we continue to do every day”. Talk about the differences, which make us special, which enrich us, bring Abruzzo among you and to those who come after you”.
