OSENCE – Reports of attacks by prisoners do not stop. A situation that Sappe defines “no longer tolerable”. Yesterday yet another case in Calabrian prisons. Inside the “Sergio Cosami” prison of Cosenza an inmate attacked an officer during a visit to the infirmary. After demanding to be subjected to medical checks, hhe attacked the prison officer who had escorted him to the medical center Sthrowing him to the ground. Then kicked him in the leg. The agent was rescued with a prognosis of ten days.
«The situation is increasingly difficult to manage, explains Francesco Ciccone, regional secretary of Sappe. Because of one an increasingly violent and disrespectful prison population. In 2023 almost 2 thousand attacks across Italy
In 2023 alone, over 1,800 officers were attacked with a prognosis of more than seven days because they were beaten by prisoners. An average of five a day. In particular: approximately 350 prison officers ended up in hospital in Lombardy; 280 in Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta and Liguria; 270 in Sicily; 260 in Lazio, Abruzzo and Molise; 210 in Veneto; Trentino and Friuli; over 200 in Campania, as in Emilia Romagna and Marche; 190 in Tuscany and Umbria; 180 in Puglia and Basilicata; 160 in Calabria and 120 in Sardinia.
