TEATROLTRE, ON 24 APRIL IN PESARO IN THE COUNCIL ROOM OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF PESARO THE BORGIA THEATER PRESENTS “GIACOMO. AN INTERVENTION OF DRAMATIC ART IN THE POLITICAL FIELD”
Descriptive text here

Wednesday 24 April at the Council Hall of the Municipality of Pesaro The Borgia Theatre present the show James. An intervention of dramatic art in the political spherea project by Elena Cotugno (also on stage) e Gianpiero Alighiero Borgia centered on the full minutes of two sessions of the Parliamentary Assembly, which define Matteotti’s relationship with fascism.

The show – proposed in the rich program of TeatrOltre, festival conceived and created in the name of multidisciplinarity byAMAT with i Local municipalitiesthe contribution of Marche region And MiC – wants to highlight Matteotti’s political speech, comparing two of his speeches in Parliament, that of 31 January 1921, in which he denounces the connivance between the bourgeois political forces and the fascist gangs, and that of 30 May 1924, the The last session Matteotti participated in before being assassinated, in which he contested the results of the elections of April of that year. The re-presentation of Matteotti’s words takes place in their naked and terrifying truth, inviting the public to reflect on the meaning of political militancy, on citizenship rights, on the possibility of opposing fascist violence with the reference to the values of freedom and democracy, but also the role of theater in society, in a way in which ideals become works of art.

Teatro dei Borgia continues its research on the relationship between theater and reality and between theater and politics, bringing the political word and the themes of democracy onto the stage and using the assembly minutes as elements of reality and syntagms of its own poetic discourse. On stage are remnants of democracy on which Matteotti’s existence climbs, stuck in his political role, like the Winnie of the Happy days of Beckett is stuck in the sand, from which he cannot free himself and from which he feels the duty not to free himself.

Elena Cotugno and Gianpiero Borgia develop a work on the role far from the Italian tradition of the mask, both parodic and documentary in a comparison with the historical document, the political discourse and not with the fictional drama. Thus the word becomes an instrument for activating an ever-living energetic flow. In the presence of the audience, witnesses of the action, the performance, thanks to this paroxysmal actress training, transforms into an authentic theatrical ritual with which the actress gives her “secular body” to the words of Giacomo Matteotti.

“In the case of James the ghost we want to make appear – declare the authors of the show – is not Matteotti but the political discourse, the real, incisive one, which becomes destiny in the lives of men and history in that of peoples. With James we try to bring our theatre, which we understand as an intervention of dramatic art in the political sphere, into a territory of communion with reality, on the stages the words around which the political community is built must take shape, the words that are at the foundation of the Republic”.

The costumes of the show – a co-production Borgia Theatre And Associated Artists Goriziacreated with the support of Presidency of the Council of Ministers and with the patronage of Municipality of Fratta Polesine, Giacomo Matteotti Foundation, “Filippo Turati” Historical Studies Foundation And Circolo Fratelli Rosselli Foundation – I’m from Giuseppe Avallonescenic space of Filippo Sarcinelliconception, direction and lighting by Gianpiero Borgia.
