The former railway now becomes a cycle/pedestrian path – L’Aquila

AVEZZANO. The former railway track of the sugar factory becomes the property of the Municipality of Avezzano which will make it a panoramic route reserved for bicycles and runners. The approximately 5 kilometer long cycle/pedestrian path that starts from the centre, i.e. from the train station, will be called Via delle Stelle until it reaches the industrial centre, cutting the city in two. After months and months of negotiations, the municipal executive approved the resolution relating to the agreement between the institution and the company Rivaluazione Trara which is owned by the family Pickaxe of Celano. «Another dispute resolved», for the mayor of Avezzano, Gianni Di Pangrazio. In particular, the agreement provides for the payment in favor of Revaluation Trara of 687 thousand 323.62 euros (consisting of the difference between the amount owed by the Municipality to the company equal to 1 million 632 thousand 232.67 euros and the amount, in turn, owed by the company to the Municipality for the unpaid IMU and TASI relating to the years 2017/2022 equal to 450 thousand euros). Of these, 373 thousand euros for the occupation of the areas and 296 thousand for the related damages, in addition to the former primary school in via Garibaldi, for an estimated value of 500 thousand euros, present among the alienable properties. In exchange the Municipality will become owner of the railway for an estimated value of 960 thousand euros. Not only that, having set aside 1 million and 44 thousand euros in its budget following the latest unfavorable ruling, the organization will be able to immediately invest 373 thousand euros for the initial part of the route. The negotiations with the Piccone family, a few months ago, were resumed by the will of the mayor Di Pangrazio, who intended to remove 24 thousand square meters from neglect and to give the city an outdoor pedestrian and running route, with a strong suggestive value.
After a majority discussion, the resolution will have to be examined by the city council to complete and perfect the process, but the approved text already puts the parties’ commitments on paper, unblocking a tangled affair that has been at a standstill for years. The new cycle/pedestrian path that will be built on the “ashes” of the former sugar factory railway will become part of the new city plan for sustainable mobility that will be presented after the Giro d’Italia in the city. The route can be traveled in both directions for a total of approximately 10 kilometres.
